THE PRIME MINISTER.
HONOURED BY CANTERBURY. By Telegraph—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH. August 3. At a gathering representative of all shades of political opinion, attended by about 300 people, the Prime Minister (Hon. G. W. Forbes- was honoured by Canterbury residents on Saturday evening, to mark the attainment for the first time, of a man born in this province, of the highest office in the Dominion. The chairman, Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, and Dr John Guthrie woposed the toast of the guest of honour, both referred to Mr Forbes’s uprightness of character. Mr Forbes, responding, said he had never been at a meeting where he had Iso many friends. He defended the l Governs eot's Uixatio n o- ! deplored Canada’s action in increasing j the tariff on New Zealand butter. ! “I hope we shall be able to obtain ■ more favourable terms,” Mr Forbes i said. “It is a ve y short-sighted policy on the part of Canada, as the I balance of trade is all in her favour. I We do not think we have been fairly I treated.”
