SCHOOL GUTTED. By Telegraph.—Pres* Association NEW PLYMOUTH, July 25. Damage estimated at about £I3OO was done to the Central School, New Plymouth, to-night, by a fire that broke out at about 6 p.m. The origin was apparently a defective chimney in one of the class-rooms. The flames spread rapidly through the rafters, and it was two hours before the outbreak was subdued, owing to the great difficulty in getting at the seat of the trouble. Four classrooms were practically gutted aloft, and water and smoke caused considerable damage to school books and fittings. The school is a large one accommodating nearly 600 pupils. It is built of wood, and is very old. The Education Department carries its own fire risk.
