BIG ’QUAKE.

WESTPORT SHAKEN. By Telegraph—Press Association. WESTPORT, July 25. Preceded by a terrific boom, Westport experienced at 8.42 p.m. the biggest ’quake since last Christmas. It brought people from their homes into the streets, but so far as can be gathered no damage of consequence occurred. FELT AT GREYMOUTH. By Telegraph—Press Association. GREYMOUTH, July 25. A very sharp earthquake shock was experienced this evening at Greymouth at 8.40 o’clock. The direction was from the north. No damage was done but considerable alarm was occasioned. POSTAL OFFICERS REPORT. By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, July 25. The secretary to the Post and Telegraph Department (Mr G. McNamara) has received the following message from the Chief Postmaster at Westport:—

“A very sharp earthquake occurred at 8.40 to-night, lasting about a minute. It was preceded by loud rumbles. The intensity was six of the rossi forel scale. The ’quake was felt at Karamea with the same intensity, but no damage was reported anywhere.”
