WINTER KNITTING

t::~ easily made ifu^-me-TIGIIT. Now that cold dcys and long even-io-v ar « here, thoughts reem naturally to turn to knitting, and to those who arc looking for something useful and ! -moldy node the übiquitous and cosy “hug-mc-t:ghts” makes a cure appeal, ['his is a most easily mode garment. \nd if worked in an enchanting shade >f pink, blue or mauve wool, produces in attractive result. As a comfortable bed jacket it is unrivalled. For an elderly person it is useful in the house to protect the choulders when going into a chilly room, and it is invaluable for wearing under an evening cloak, when it amply justifies its name and is not bulky. Various kinds of wool may be used. Three-ply, either plain or with a silk strand running through it. is most popular, though if a heavier and warmer result is desired, four-ply wool Is better. A very pretty effect is obtained by knitting blue or pink threeply wool with a strand of two-ply cream wool introduced after the cuff is completed. The cuff is knitted on ordinary steel sock needles, and the remainder on those large, thick wooden ones known as “hug-me-tight” needles. Cast on 60 stitches and knit one plain one purl "or about four inches. Then transfer to the large needles, increasing quickly to 80 stitches. Continue thus until nearing the other cuff, when corresponding decreases must be made. The total length of the “hug-me-tight” should be the measurement of the arms extended from wrist to wrist. Join up the sides for about ten inches to form a sleeve. Turn down the edge along the middle of one side for about 12 inches to form a collar, and attach wide ribbon ties. If desired, a narrow edging may be crocheted in silk round the neck, front and cuffs. A more elaborate effect is obtained with an edging of marabout to match the wool, and with the addition of a Japanese silk or crepe de chine lining. The quantity of wool required for a really roomy “hug-me-tight” is soz. of three-ply or 6oz. of four-ply.
