The tables at the Grand Hotel last night were gay with yellow narcissi in crystal vases, when Misses Pinckney, Glenaray, Southland, entertained their friends at a cheery little dinner party before going to the Cabaret. Miss Hope Pinckney was frocked in a black ninon frock, patterned in a floral design and made with a long full skirt and tight bodice. Miss Nona Pinckney wore a frock of white pin spot tulle, made very full and long; and Miss Evelyn Pinckney wore a frock of midnight blue ninon, the long flared skirt falling to the ground. An amusing and interesting feature of a gymkhana held at Preston Park by the Southdown Hunt was a pageant of 1830, which gave a glimpse of hunting as it was done in those days. Two gay coachloads, a smart little phaeton and a gig, followed by the faithful carriage dog, the Dalmatian, as well as a strange figure riding “Penny-half-penny,” all made their appearance at the “meet.” The riders were the gayest figures of all; habits of every colour and material w'ere the order of the field in those days. Sidesaddle skirts in blues, purples and greens swept as low as the knee of the riders’ horses. Feathers and veils were fashionable, too. And to-day. A great contrast was struck by the “meet” of 1930, which followed. It was altogether a less picturesque and more businesslike affair, and served to prove how motor transport helps the hunting of to-day. The trailer horse-box of modern times saves many a long and unnecessary ride to the meets; the smallest type of trailer—to hold one horse—may be hitched on to any car. The only ones at all dissatisfied with the pageant were the hounds, whose enthusiasm showed signs of waning by the end of the performance. Visitors’ List.
