SPORTING.

SOUTH CANTERBURY HUNT MEETING. GOOD PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY. The outlook appears to be good for the steeplechase meeting of the South Canterbury Hunt, to be held at Washdyke racecourse to-day. The first event is timed to start at 11.30. A passenger train is due to leave Timaru for the racecourse at 10.50. and to commence the return trip at 4.30. A raceday time-table will be in operation to cover all stations and branches between Christchurch and Oamaru. The storm which struck many parts of the Dominion on Thursday nrtht and Friday morning did not affect South Canterbury, and appearances point to the track being in good winter order. Nice fields are engaged in the majority of the events, and there is every prospect of a fine day’s sport. A radio gramophone installation will

provide music, and also give details of play in the third Rugby test at Auckland.

Since acceptances were taken Hois' or has had to be destroyed o ing to meeting with serious injury while schooling at Riccarton. The hurdle race in consequence looks even more ooen, and Hard Prince. Membo end Exide arc likely to command most attention.

The Pareora Hunters’ Steeplechase is restricted to horses which have never won a stake of any descrir on worth £IOO to the winner, and Goldtown is consequently ineligible. Barrington has a later engagement in the Tescliemaker Steeplechase, but probably will run in the Pareora, and is fairly certain to be favourite. Deportment is reported to be sore, and for second choice backers may look to Tract?.rian and Marco Polo.

Valves and Radiate figure most prominently in discussions in the South Canterbury Steeplechase, this beingnatural when it is remembered that both are in the Grand National. Radiac. if he has regained the form he displayed at Riverton, will present a very serious danger to the favoured pair, and he is in much better order than when he raced at Washdyke in June. Rangatahi is likely to be reserved for the Teschemaker Memorial.

Oriflamb is ineligible for the Levels Hack Handicap, but backers will have plenty of scope with Fair Money, Valuator. ’ Sweet Refrain. Night Effort, Royal Limond and Rapina engaged. Fair Money. Rapina and Valuator may be their selections.

..oncma Star is the only withdrawal so far from the Washdyke Saddle Trot, and there will be from a dozen to fourteen runners. Derry Pointer. Real Girl and Prince Chimes are a likely

The Teschemaker Memorial acceptors include three —Rangatahi, Barrington and Tractarian —with engagements earlier in the day. Rangatahi is troubled with a light splint, but is a likely starter in this event. Wairio has not been seen in public since he became entangled in a wire fence at Ashburton, but if he is at his best his Wingatui form entitles him to the position of favourite. Rangatahi and Ngaliue appeal most of the others. Gold Mint has the best previous form of the Hunters’ Plate candidates, but he has not been prominent lately. Fresh Breeze is a useful weight-car-rier. and Commenter won well at Waimate. The winner may come from the three named.

Taboo and Town Major will be able to fight their Trentham battle over again, but with H. Gray up the local gelding will be preferred. First Raid and Evening are most favoured of the remainder. Town Major and First Raid may keep the money at Washdyke.

Considerable interest is being evinced in the contest, now nearly closed, between H. Gray and A. E. Ellis for the jockeys’ premiership. At present Gray leads by 73 to 69, and arrived yesterday in quest of further additions to his total. The veteran northernc: has not ridden at Washdyke since the S.C.J.C.

meeting of 1913, when he won the Summer Cup on Flora McDonald and the Trial Plate on Baritone. His mounts will be Night Effort and Town Major. Ellis will not arrive until this morning, and it is not definite what horses he will ride. He has an advantage over his rival in being able to take mounts over fences, and is eligible also to ride in the Hunters’ Plate. He is pretty certain to steer Radiate, Ngahue, Fair Money and West Dome, and it is probable that, if he desires it, his brother Arthur will give him the mount on Barrington. There is a possibility also that he may be on Gay Fashion in the hurdle race, and he may have a choice of two or more in the Claremont Handicap. The card is as follows:
