BOY SCOUTS.

SWEARING-IN CEREMONY. The first combined ceremony of Bov Scouts for the swearing in of recruits was held at the St. John Ambulance Hall last evening, when 23 boys were initiated by the Commissioner. The troops were arranged in horse-shoe formation, with troop banners and entrants in the centre. Before performing the ceremony, T \ir A. L. Gee. in briefly outlining the aims of the association, pointed out that the movement endeavoured to develop good citizenship among boys, by forming their character, training them in habits of observance, obedience and self reliance; inculcating loyalty and thoughtfulness for others; teaching them services useful to the public: and handcrafts useful to themselves. Mr S. M. Bentley carried out the swearing in ceremony, the respective Scout Masters assisting. On enrolment the new tenderfeet were taken over by the troop patrol leaders. Mr Waters, representing the Rotarians, Spoke on the ethics of Rotary ss applied to the welfare of New Zealand's youth. The speaker for the evening was Mr G. Wallace. Speaking of the ceremony, he pointed out that to become a scout, a boy must be between the ages of II and 18, and that he must satisfy nis Scout master that he knows the Scoutlaw signs and salute; the comi position of the Union Jack: the ures of the Scout staff and certain useful knotts and their application. In stressing the value of the promise Mr Wallace reminded all Scouts, especially those new tenderfeet. that in keeping faithful to the promises and living up to the laws of the Scout movement, not only would they become good and useful citizens but by their example they would diffuse the spirit of loyalty and thoughtfulness among others. Aftre the ceremony the Commissioner presented W. Tizard with an assistant Scoutmasters warrant for St. Mary’s troop. In conclusion the Commissioner stressed the appreciation of the Scouts for assistance rendered the movement by citizens, especially by Mr W. Smith, superintendent of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, for whom hearty cheers were given. After the grand howl and haka. the Scout masters resumed control of their troops.
