CHRISTCHURCH NEWS

(From Our Own Correspondent.) IN AND ABOUT THE CITY. CHRISTCHURCH, July 25. Ferry Steamers Delayed. Encountering a sou-’west gale on leaving Pencarrow Heads, the Maori was nearly three hours late in arrival at Lyttelton this morning. Last night was exceptionally cold at Lyttelton, and residents awoke this morning to find the Mount Herbert range thickly coated with snow, almost to the water’s edge. The Port Hills were also heavily laden near the sum, mit. Snow was experienced at Lyttelton this morning between eight and nine o’clock, but there was only a light fall. No work was carried out on the waterfront this morning, shipping companies contenting themselves in engaging labour for one o’clock. The ferry steamer Maori ran into a strong sou’-west gale half way down Wellington Harbour. The passage

across Cook Strait was a stormy one, and Cape Campbell was not reached until 11.47, instead of about 10.20 p.m., as when the ship is running to schedule. Rain ahri sleet squalls were encountered in the Straits, but the sea was not as heavy as that encountered by the Maori early in June, when she lost part of her deck fittings, and a number of motor-cars were badly damaged. The vessel ran under reduced speed until 3 a.m. Kaikoura was passed at 4.15 a.m., instead of 1.15. and the vessel was alongside her berth at 9.42.
