Waives y Economy m & rn GUGLIELMO MARCONI—the son of an Irishwoman, was born at Bologna in 1874. Twenty years later Sir Oliver Lodge demonstrated that signals could be transmitted without wires by the agency of Hertzian waves (first produced in the ether by Hertz in 1887). Only two years elapsed when in 1896 Marconi evolved a method of transmitting and receiving these waves to and from a distance of a few hundred yards. In 1899 Marconi’s first communication was sent across the English Channel, and in 1901 he spanned the Atlantic. Now .... Commander Byrd when in the Antarctic was able to keep in hourly touch with America. When in 1896 Marconi evolved a method of transmitting and receiving signals by means of electromagnetic waves, he made a discovery destined to economise time in greater degree than has any other invention in the history of the world. True, this is not the only boon this genius conferred upon humanity, but this economy of itself is the source of other and greater intrinsic benefits and without it the invention would have lost most of its value.
