TIMARU—JULY 23, 1930. / (Before Mr C. R. Orr-Waiker, S.M.) CRIMINAL OFFENCE. Edwin Lewis Thomas, aged 20, a cycle mechanic, was charged that on or about March 22, at Timaru, he did unlawfully carnally know a girl under the age of 16 years. Accused was represented by Mr A. D. Mcßae. Detective Studholme, who prosecuted, asked for a remand until 2.15 to-day. The remand, as asked for, was granted. Bail was allowed in self £IOO, and two sureties of £SO. CIVIL CASES. Judgment for plaintiff, by default, was entered in the following undefended civil cases: John Needham, Ltd., v. English Motors, Ltd., claim £3/3/9, costs only; N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., v. William McMillan, claim £7B/7/7, costs £4/19/-; Dalgety and Co., Ltd., V. William McMillan, claim £2/1/-, costs £l/3/6; James Meehan and Son v. William McMillan, claim £6/17/6, costs 15/-; N. E. Thomas v. D. McLaren, claim £3/17/-, costs £l/3/6. In a judgment summons case, J. O’Brien was ordered to pay George Campbell £3/1/6 forthwith, in default three days’ imprisonment. Eric MeKnight was ordered to pay the C.F.C.A., Ltd., £4/11/8, in default four days’ imprisonment. DEFENDED ACTION. Mary Young, widow, of Makikihi, claimed from Michael Joseph Sullivan (Mr M. A. Raymond), threshing mill owner, of Makikihi, the sum of £132 13/1& for cutting wheat, stacking, grazing, etc. Defendant counter-claimed for £26/11/- for cutting chaff and threshing wheat and oats in 1925 and 1926. Plaintiff detailed at length the numerous items in her claim, defendant, in evidence, stating that he had settled most of them with plaintiff’s son, who was acting on behalf of plaintiff. Subsequently the son took over the farm, and defendant and he worked in together. In regard to the counter-claim, defendant said that the amounts had been owing for some years. The Magistrate said it was very difficult to get to the bottom of plaintiff’s claim, because she had come to the Court unprepared, and without witnesses. He would have to settle the matter somehow, and would give judgment for Sullivan, on the claim and counter-claim, for a total of £2O/9/-.
