NEWS AND NOTES,

The special attraction to-morrow night at the skating ring, is a hockey match on skates between a Christchurch ladies’ team and a Timaru ladies’ team; also a Christchurch men’s team and a Timaru men’s team.

An interesting position has arisen regarding the contest for the Western Maori seat, which was rendered vacant by the death of the late Sir Maui Pomare. Speaking at Christchurch the Right Hon. J. G. Coates said there had previously been some understanding that if Sir Maui was not opposed for the Western Maori seat, Sir Apirana Ngata would not be opposed for the Eastern Maori. The matter was also mentioned by the Prime Minister. “The Maoris may have had some understanding,” said Mr Forbes. “The question of representation has usually been left to the Maori members in the House of Representatives. There is no arrangement between the parties, and the question of the contest has not yet been discussed by the United Party.”

Attention is drawn to Miss Venning’s advertisement re the arts of music, painting and drawing. By the “Naunton” or new method of pianoforte, pupils of any age may acquire the system in a single term of eight lessons—

First tramp: “Yes, I had a beard like yours once and when I realised how it made me look I cut it off.” Second tramp: “Well, I had a face like yours once, and when I realised that I couldn’t cut it off I grew this beard.”

“Suva is a funny little town, things municipal being more or less a joke to visitors,” writes a Dunedin man sojourning in Fiji. “Every clock in the town keeps different time, which makes keeping appointments awkward. The King's Birthday was celebrated on June 9 instead of June 3; why, I know not! The Public Library is wonderful. It contains a few' old and tattered volumes in course of being eaten by a species of borer very prevalent here.”

A Record! The wonder values offered at Cameron’s have made this great mid-winter sale an outstanding record—a record in bargains and a record in trade. Come to Cameron’s tomorrow

"Got Excited.” Well, of course you can hardly blame a man for getting excited when he sees such magnificent bargains as Cameron is offering at his super mid-winter sale

THE TREATMENT of RHEUMATISM During the winter months, particularly, the system is more susceptible to rheumatism and kindred troubles. Ayres’ Rumatox is a scientific remedy, specially prescribed for the treatment of rheumatism, gout, etc. It gives instant and permanent relief to the worst cases, reduces the swelling and by eliminating the uric acid from the system, restores the body to health and vigour. It is equally effective for sciatica, lumbago, gravel, etc; 2/6 and 4/6 bottle. E. C. Ayres’, Ltd., Chemists, Stafford Street, Timaru

Disturbance in City.—Quite a disturbance was caused in Stafford Street recently by a heated argument between two men. The subject of the argument was whether Cameron’s sale bargains were the best in Timaru. As the argument was undecided, we will let the public be the judge. What do you think of these three lines to be cleared at half-price: All pullover sweaters, cardigan jackets and lumber jackets at half-price. See window display

j A correspondent of the Auckland I “Sun” asks:—Can you guess what these are?: “The Haunted House,” “Slavery,” I “Flying Blind,” “Three Bundles,” “Purj gatory,” “Love’s Triumph,” “The Ter- ; rible Red Dwarf.” No, you are wrong. | They are not the names of Edgar Wallace thrillers or the latest talkies, but the titles of sermons preached in Auckland churches last Sunday.

How labour is being replaced by machinery in many industries is shown in a recent State industry, the Bank of Montreal quoting the Provincial Bureau of Labour’s estimate that 5000 combine harvesters in use in Saskatchewan to-day have displaced about 20,000 farm labourers. This innovation obviates the necessity of importing harvest hands from Eastern Canada. Harvest in Canada was usually looked to as a great absorbent of unskilled labour.
