POLICEMAN AS WORKER.
COMPENSATION UNDER ACT. By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, July 17. What was stated to be the first case in New Zealand of a policeman receiving compensation under the Workers’ Compensation Act, for injury received while he was on his beat, was mentioned in the Arbitration Court. Mr Sullivan appeared for Constable Edwin Ray Young, of Auckland, and Mr Hubble for the Crown. Claimant suffered two injuries to his ankle while on duty at Freeman’s Bay on the night of October 2nd. He stumbled in a rut in a footpath, and sprained his left ankle. On November 6th. he again twisted and sprained his ankle at night on the same beat. As he developed chronic synovitis, entailing partial permanent disability, he had to be retired from the Police Force. Mr Sullivan informed the Court that a settlement had been reached between the parties. On the basis of a estimate of a medical referee, claimant would receive £154, and costs.
