GENERAL NEWS. One building permit, of a value of £l5O. was received by the Borough Council last month. During the past month, the Borough Council outside staff has been en- j gaged patching east-side streets, also i the North Belt and Cass Street, where ( required. The work of grading and j shingling Whitcombe Street has been j completed, and water channels re- j ceived attention. Provision has been j made for necessary drainage for the j Fire Brigade station, and much time , and attention has been given to the Orari waterworks. NOTES. The Young Women’s Basketball Club will hold a dance to-night. BOROUGH FINANCE. To last night’s meeting of the Temuka Borough Council, the Finance Committee reported that the paysheet of the district fund account for the morjth amounted to £734 16/6. The items were chargeable to the several accounts as follows: —General £136/16/3; sanitation £l9/15/-; drain, maintenance £l/4/11; fire station loan I £400; waterworks maintenance j £79/15/3; street lighting £97/5/1; mak- j ing the total shown above . Amounts received during the month j were:—Rates £222/14/1; fines 15/8; 1 licenses £175/6/10; motor drivers’ lie- 1 enses £22/10/-; rezjts £3; waterworks £5/4/10; taxi ’phone refund £3; sun- j dries £2/6/9; a total of £434/18/2. ! The report was adopted. HEAVY GALE. A southerly gale of exceptional i severity descended on Temuka at about midnight on Tuesday. Almost ; without warning the first gusts swept , on the town, and in a large number j of houses lights flickered for a few moments as windows and doors were ' made more secure. When the wind died down to some extent, heavy rain j commenced, and continued for several hours. Yesterday morning there was quietness in the town, the sun shining on a scene that looked little the worse j for the visitation, except, perhaps, 1 where a few fences showed visible sign | of rough usage. / j METHODIST “WINTER EVENINGS.” j The meeting at the Methodist Hall i on Tuesday last took the form of a debate, the subject being: “That the Moving Pictures Do More Harm than Good." The positive position was taken by the Presbyterian Class, the mover and seconder being Mr T. Hopkinson and Miss Low’ry respectively. The negative was taken by the Methodist Class, Mr Don Reid and Miss Edna Dale stating the claims in favour of the “movies.” Miss Brown guided the debaters, and a number of the young people joined in the discussion that ensued. On a vote being taken, opinion was found to be equally divided. The leaders in the debate w r ere congratulated on the able marshalling of facts and opinions. After supper, the remainder of the evening w r as spent in round games. BASKETBALL. The following will represent Temuka in a match against High School this afternoon at 2.30 on the school grounds:— A. P. Dwan, L. Radford, E. McGarva, I. Foster, K. Lyons, R. Davis, Z. Poultney. W. Miss Mina McGill, of Dunsandel. is spending a holiday in Temuka as the guest of her sister, Miss Maisie McGill. GOLF. On Saturday there will be a match which should cause a good deal of interest, more so as it will be the first of its kind held by this Club, viz: ladies versus men. The match will be on a handicap basis, ladies receiving an extra six on to their handicaps, this being the difference between the ladies’ and men’s bogey.
