That school children who sampled the contents of bottles found after a dance at the school, became “stunned,” according to a speaker at a meeting of the Eltham County Council. Country dances and the contention that Taranaki is being ruined through the prevalence of drinking and its effects upon young people attending them were discussed by the Council on Saturday. The members passed a resolution to the effect that although the Council does not license country dance halls, it entirely approves of the New Zealand Alliance attitude in the matter of cancelling the licenses of halls where drinking takes place. Evidence of increasing popularity of the sports meetings conducted by the South Canterbury Schools’ Sports Association may be gathered from the numbers of entries for the annual seven-a-side football and six-a-side basketball tournaments. Although the meeting is to be held earlier this year, on 26th July, the entries received total 133, of which there are 65 teams entered in the basketball section. and 68 in the football section. This is an increase of 40 entries on last year’s figures, and 31 on the previous best entry in 1928.
