SOCIAL NOTES.

Mrs G. Manchester, Fairlie, is spending a holiday in Waimate. Mrs W. H. Walton, Park Lane, left yesterday on a visit to Dunedin. Mrs C.*E. Greenall, left on Tuesday for a short visit to Dunedin. Miss Joan Hargreaves, Kakahu, who is staying with Mrs Nicholls, Maheno, is expected home to-day. Mr and Mrs Mitchell, “Kenwyn,” Waimate, left yesterday on a trip to England. Mrs Wilfred Howell, Cave, is the guest of Miss Knubley, Sarah Street, for a few days. Miss Silvester, arrived from Ashburton last week, and is staying with Mrs C. J. LeCren, Grey Road. Mr and Mrs H. E. Wright, who have been staying at their home in Craigie Street, will return to Mayfield to-day. Mr and Mrs R. J. McCallum and Miss Alma McCallum, Sefton Street, and Miss Doris Fleming, Chrsitchurch, have left to spend the remainder of the winter in the North Island. Mr and Mrs J. N. and Miss Nancy Ballantyne gave a delightful evening at their residence on Tuesday. The guest of the evening was Mr J. C. White, from Dunedin, who is spending this week in Timaru. The programme was comprised mainly with dancing. A humourous interlude however was given by Mr White in a lecturette, the subject being, ‘‘People I have met.” This was heartily enjoyed by all. The evening was brought to a close with the singing of Auld Lang Syne. Jonquils and daisies decorated the rooms of Mrs W. G. Tweedy’s home in Nile Street, yesterday afternoon, when she entertained the friends of Mrs a. M. Nicholson, who is leaving shortly for her new home in Melbourne. Mrs Tweedy received her guests wearing a frock of brown figured satin, and the guest of honour was in a brown cloth coat and skirt, with brown furs and a hat to match. Those invited included —Mrs F. Last night the Bay Hall was the scene of a delightful dance organised by the Timaru High School Old Girls’ Association. The hall was festooned with royal blue and gold streamers, and the lights were hung with the same effective colours. Boughs of greenery were effectively arranged m comers of the ballroom, and outlined the entrances and stage. From the roof hundreds of snowfall streamers weighted with silver stars were hung. In the supper room, the same colour scheme of blue and gold was carried out, and the tables were gay with vases of yellow jonquils and autumn leases. Among those present were:—Mrs D. S. Kemshed, in shell pink georgette with deep insertion of gold lsce in the full skirt; Mrs ' Wm. Raymond, black crepe de chene, with panel of gold lace; Mrs J. D.
