Officers of the Japanese steamer Tango Maru reported that when the vessel was two days out from Thursday Island, a native fishing boat was sighted, flying distress signals. The steamer hove to, and it was found that the nine Malays on board were starving. The natives told a pitiful story. Their boat had been becalmed for a long period at Bird Island. When the position became desperate, the majority of the crew, numbering 40 were left ashore and the remainder set out to obtain assistance. The famished men were supplied with medicine, food and water.
