FAMINE IN SOFT WOODS An Expert’s Warning A paper on “Forestry and Empire” was read at the recent Conference of the British Association for the advancement of science by Sir Peter Clutterbuck, ex-Inspector 'General of Forests to the Government of India. He said the British Empire and the United States were almost defenceless against the coming world famine in soft woods, which some authorities expected in years. France and Germany, on the other hand, had developed a strong “Forest Conscienceness.” They realised that timber was next in importance to food and clothing. In spite of the plant-ii-’S Conifers, Australia and New Zealand were not likely to have an exportable surplus. Canada was rapidly exhausting her supplies. A resolution was adopted urging the formation of an Empire Forestry Association. *
