FEDERAL BUDGET UNDER FIRE.
Defended By Prime Minister “NOT INTENDED TO BE POPULAR 1 ’ United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received July 13, 7.30 p.m.) CANBERRA, July 13. The Prime Minister (Mr Scullin) vigorously defended his budget against the critics. He said that apparently some people wished to repudiate debts and reduce war and old age pensions. He certainly would not do that. “We intend to go along fearlessly, facing the position and balancing the budget.,” said Mr Brennan (AttorneyGeneral). He did not expect the budget would be popular. On the contrary, they intended it to be drastic.
