TECHNICAL COLLEGE

MEETING OF MANAGERS. The Board of Managers of the Timaru Technical College met on Saturday evening. Present: Messrs A. Stead (chairman), G. T. Koller, E. W. Jones, A. Washer and J. W. Preen. Principal’s Report. The principal (Mr F. L. N. Tuck), reported that the enrolments for the day school for 1930 totalled 243, comprising 119 boys and 124 girls. The average attendance, during the month, was 191.27 on a full-time roll number of 205, which was very satisfactory. The number of individual pupils in attendance at various classes from the Boys’ High School was 124, and from primary schools 143. The mid-year examinations had just been held, lasting a full week. When the results were completed, reports would be sent to parents in the usual way. The results of the first round of inter-school games hid been very satisfactory. The football team won all three matches played, and the basketball teams, six matches out of seven. Excellent arrangements were made for pupils, with those of other schools, to view the football match against the British team. Eighty-three pupils took advantage of this opportunity. At the evening classes the enrolments for 1930 totalled 360. Work was being continued steadily. The class in invalid cookery for nurses had been resumed, j During the month the College was visited by Mr T. R. Cresswell, M.A., representing the Education Department. Mr Cresswell expressed himself as | generally satisfied with the work being | done. A new electrically-driven saw and emery wheel had been installed I and would prove of great service in the woodwork shop. The cost had been shared equally by the Board and the Department. The annual grant of £SO had been received from the Timaru Borough Council. Owing to illness. Mr Harte was obliged to be away from all classed last week. Mr V. Koens. one oi Mr Harte’s trainees, proved an efficient substitute. General. It was decided to send a remit to the Technical School Managers’ Association othat it be a recommendation to the Education Department to periodically send the Director of Technical Education or the Principal of a Technical College abroad to study the latest methods in technical education. Votes of thanks were accorded the teaching staff for organising the welcome to the principal, Mr Tuck. Similar compliments were paid to Mr Stead Land Mr Preen, and a vote of thanks to the Main School Committee for the loan of their piano, was carried.
