SOCIAL NOTES

Mrs James Manchester returned to Waimate on Tuesday, after spending some weeks in Dunedin.

Mrs J. Macdonald, Invercargill, who is spending the week-end at the Grand, will return south to-morrow.

Miss Dorothy Walton, Park Lane, will leave to-morrow on a short visit to Dunedin.

Miss Margaret Lawson, Karitane, who spent the week-end at the Grand, motored home yesterday.

Miss Kathleen Kerr, Geraldine, who is the guest of Miss Jean Campbell, Wal-iti Road, will return home to-day. Mrs F. Dunnage, Christchurch, who has been staying with Mrs J. D. H. Buchanan, Grantchester School, Otipua Road, returned home on Saturday.

Miss Ernestine Hadfield, Craighead Diocesan School, who is spending the week-end in Christchurch, will return to Timaru to-day.

Miss Dorothy Nash and Miss Zoe Sanderson, Craighead Diocesan School, who are spending the weekend at Tekapo, will return home today.

A very enjoyable dance was given on Saturday night by Mrs J. 'WAdams, at her home in Wai-iti Road. Dancing took place upstairs, where the large ball-room was hung with coloured streamers and decorated with greenery and autumn leaves. Supper was served in the dining-room, the table being decorated with jonquils m j crystal bowls and tall silver candelabra * with orange-tinted shades. Mrs Adams received the guests in a draped frock of georgette and lace. Miss Ethel < Adams was dressed in a full-skirted pale pink georgette frock, the full ! skirt having bands of silver lace. < Those present included Mr J. W. Adams, Mr and Mrs Rillstone. The “Nga-ira” All Saints’ Brownies held a very enjoyable plain and fancy dress party in All Saints’ Hall on July 5, when a large number of child- ! ren in fancy dress were present. Mrs Angland and Mrs Hart very kindly judged the dresses. The result was , as follows: — Best Fancy Dress (girls).—Margaret Peach (Spanish Dancer) 1, Noeline Tait (China Shepherdess) 2. Boy— Billy Southgate (Blue Boy) 1. Most Original.—Girls, Jean Sinclair I (Peacock) 1, Jean McQuirter (Court Chocolates) 2. Boy—Allen McQuirter (Footballer). Paper Dress.—Mae Marsh (China Shepherdess) 1, Winnie Harrow (Fairy) 2. Special prizes were given by Mrs Angland and Miss Lamborn to Betty McDonald’ (Pink Fairy), Loui Auld (Indian). Highly Commended.—lnez Vucetich, Joy Morrison (Dual Characters Dutch), Betty McAlister (Eastern Princess), Joyce Mclntosh (Waimataitai School). Games were played until 5.30, when tea was served. The success of the party was due to the help of the Brownie Commitee.
