OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP OF U.S.A.. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright NEW YORK, July 10. An Interlachen (Minnesota), R. T. Jones took the lead in the Open Golf Championship with a first round of 71, which is one under par. Under a broiling sun, with the temperature reaching 100, Bobby Jones went out in 34 and back in 37, and W. Cox, with exactly the same scores, tied with Jones. They are leading a field of 142. Horton-Smith took par 36 both ways, tying with George Smith and Harry Cooper, with scores of 72. Other scores were:—
Irwin 73 Ottoman 75 John Goodman 74 M’Farlane 74 Melhorn 76 Cy-il Tolley 80 George von Elm 80 Harry Varden 81
Tolley is the only overseas challenger. Five thousand cheered Jones, who missed half a dozen putts by inches.
There was keen excitement as Jones and Horton-Smith battled stroke for stroke. On the incoming journey Jones was a stroke behind, with two to go. but on each of these HortonSmith lost. Goodman, who knocked Jones out of the National Championship last. year, thrilled the crowd, going out in 33, but he returned in 41. Goodman was flustered by the thousands who turned to watch him after trooping home with Jones. End of First Round. At the end of the first round, Smith and Armour tied for first place with 70. Bobby Jones tied for second with 71, and Kirkwood tied for ninth place with 78.
