HARRIER NOTES

NEWS FROM NEAR AND FAR. All clubs will be competing to-day in the Temuka to Timaru road race, which should bring together over 100 of the best South Island cross-country runners. Civil Service (Dunedin) has a strong team competing in to-day’s race. J. G. Barnes (who did lastest time last year) also B. R. McKernan, E. C. Brown. G. McKnight. J. Kennedy and H. Tracey. If Barnes can reproduce last year’s running he will be a great help to the team.

The following Clubs will have teams competing in to-day's race for the Cameron Banner:—Civil Service Herrier Club (Dunedin), Leith Harriers (Dunedin), Christchurch Harriers (3 teams) Presbyterian Harriers (2 teams), Timaru (2 teams), Timaru Harriers, Anglican Harriers (2 teams), Timaru Methodist Harriers, (2 teams), Baptist Harriers (Timaru), and Combined Harriers (Timaru).

The following Clubs will be represented by individuals:—Presbyterian Harriers (Christchurch*, Baptist (Christchurch). Methodist (Christchurch). St. Kilda and Pacifific (Dunedin), Y.M.C.A. (Timaru).

Leith Harriers (Dunedin) have entered a strong team in the Temuka to Timaru road race for to-day. S. Anderson (who recently won the Port Chalmers—Dunedin road race), will be amongts the leaders, and if Ward, Watson, and King, can produce last year’s running they will not be far from winning the team’s race.

All local harriers will be pleased to hear that our Christchurch friends are again supporting to-day’s race in large numbers, and although they have lost the service of J. G. Barnes, they are still well supported with some welltried runners in J. D. Pascoe, G. Austin. Barrer. and others, who will again try to hold the banner for. the winning

If weather conditions are favourable, a keen struggle for fastest time betwwen S. Anderson (Leith), J. G. Barnes (Civil Service) and B. M. Barrer (Christchurch) and our local champion, J. Eaton, should be witness-? ed.

Last Saturday all the Timaru Clubs were engaged in club fixtures and ideal weather brought good numbers out. Most of the runs were on the road in view of to-day's race, and some good performances were made. player he had a chance of seeing, for the purpose of selecting the one. who. in his opinion, could rise to the greatest golfing heights. He has named Don Spence, the 24-year-old N.S.W. professional, who won the New Soutji Wales professional title ifi 1928, and was runner-up to Fred Popplewell in the same event last year. The champion saw him in play over 72 holes. As a fact, Hagen does not bank over much on golfing talent. He holds that almost any golfer who has the grit and determination can make himself a champion. It is thought that Hagen

himself, as a young man, did :-ot give notable promise. It was the man, rather than any native ability for shot-making, that made Hagen. With his extraordinary powers of concentration. and almost obstinate determination. it is almost certain that had he devoted his attention to any other game, or even any other form of life work, he would have made just as big a success of it. He and Joe Kirkwood presented a decided contrast in this respect. Undoubtedly Kirkwood was a natural golfer. He swung his clubs as easily as a child cries. Before he met the world's best, and had unique opportunities of studying and developing his game, he was up with the best in the world. Hagen did not start that way. He hewed his game out of rude stone. But Hagen is the man who has won all the championships, while Joe Kirkwood has yet to win a world major event. For big success in the game, success such as Hagen says Don Spence could attain, constant hard work in play is essential.
