“ART IN NEW ZEALAND.”

The June number of the quarterly magazine, “Art in New Zealand,” is to hand. It is devoted chiefly to the work of the Christchurch born artist, Owen Merton, who has won success in England, Europe, and America, and now resident in London, where he lies seriously ill in a nursing home. Professor J. Shelley of Canterbury College, has contributed an interesting appreciation of Mertan’s art, and with this are featured four colour plate of water-col-ours by Merton—“ Convent in Snow, Murat,” “Farm on the Hill,” “The Cotswolds, England,” and '‘Pillars and Houses, St. Antonin.” There are also a number of black and white plates representing the many sides af the artist’s talent, as for example, a pen and ink sketch, “Souvenir de Chartres” meticulous in detail, * Another interesting article, “The Quest of K. M. Ballantyne” deals with the art of this once well-known Wellington man, and is illustrated by a fine woodcut. Other contributors to this number, are Misses Eileen Duggan (poems), Jessica Andrae (article on “Weaving in the Home”), Madeline Vyner (on “Modern Movement in Theatrical Dancing”), Helene Henderson, Messrs. Alan Mulgan and T. K. Greenish. Art notes from the various New Zealand centres are also to be found, also reproductions of pictures exhibited at the Canterbury Society’s show, and some interesting examples of the students’ work at the same exhibition.

The September number of this highly interesting magazine, is to be devoted to the work of Van Der Velden, and should have wide appeal.
