Whitebait are now appearing in the estuary of the Waikato River, and whitebait fishers are making their camps for the season. Suggestions were made last season that regulations should be gazetted preventing the very early taking of the fish, with a view to obviating risk of the annual runs of whitebait becoming smaller each year. On the other hand, it was contended there was no risk of this, and that limiting the season was not necessary. At present the price being paid for whitebait is about 2/- per lb on the river. The level of the water is low for this time of the year, but should a flood occur the water will become discoloured, and make it more difficult to secure whitebait.

One of the Nelson cars which went through to the test match at Christchurch on Saturday was practically destroyed by fire in the early hours of Saturday morning. At Hundalee, on the Christchurch side of Kaikoura there is a bad stretch of road now under- repair, and while attempting to negotiate this another Nelson car skidded and ran into some soft material. A car driven by Mr Colin Everett, pulled up to give assistance. Apparently there was a leakage of benzine, for when a lighted match was thrown on the road by one of the passengers, there was a flash of flame which enveloped the car. Some of the passengers lost their personal effects. Attempts to put out the fire were unsuccessful, and a number of other vehicles were held up until the damaged car could be edged off the highway. The passengers, five in number, were taken on to Christchurch by other motorists.

The Samoan police recently have been engaged in arresting other lawbreakers besides defaulting taxpayers. Two weeks ago a raiding party of fifteen European police, accompanied by Samoan interpreters, entered Apia village one night and systematically searched every fale and hut. The object of the search was to try to put a stop to the brewing and selling of a home-made beer called famaf, which is considerably in excess of the “under 3 per cent” beer which is the strongest drink allowed in the territory. One tourist aptly described it as “bottled dynamite.” That the search was successful is revealed by a stack of about 400 bottles now at the police station. About twenty Samoans are to be charged as a result. It is well-known that some of the highest officials brew an equally potent beer, although, of course, they are not guilty of selling it. The amount of beer consumed in Samoa would astonish statisticians. It seems that the essence of hospitality in Samoa consists of plying a visitor with beer from the moment of his arrival. This custom is not confined to the Samoans. Half-caste and practically all the European families brew their own beer. “Manuia” (good luck) is the password. Besides beer many other intoxicating liquors are brewed or distilled. Home-made stout, wines and even whisky distilled from wheat, are easily obtained by anyone in “the know.” But the most “deadly” of all is a species of gin, a clear, colourless liquid distilled from cocoa beans, resembling water in colour, but rivalling pure alcohol in strength.
