FARM LECTURES
ADDRESSES BY EXPERTS. Under the auspices of the South Canterbury Branoh of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, Messrs R. McGillivray and C. C. Leitch, of the Agricultural Department delivered lectures in the Timaru W.E.A. rooms to a meeting of farmers. Mr P. R. Talbot presided. Mr McGillivray spoke on “Improving the Pastures,” and Mr Leitch on “Crop Certification.” Both lectures were similar to those delivered to farmers at Geraldine on Thursday. At the conclusion of this address, Mr McGillivray was asked by Mr Dellow what would be the effect of top-dressing in the spring if little or no rain fell after the dressing. He replied that in the event of a dry spell following top-dressing, the result would probably not be experienced until the following spring. Another farmer asked if it would be proper to use super and lime in the growing of turnips and rape, and to this Mr McGillivray replied in the affirmative and gave instances where good results has been secured. Both lectures were illustrated by lantern slides, and were listened to with the closest attention by those present. Votes of thanks were accorded both officers at the conclusion of the meeting. _______
