PLOUGHING MATCH
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Timaru Ploughing Match Committee was held yesterday. Present—Messrs W. J. Bassett (chairman), A. Fraser, A. Ward. F. Squires, J. Nicol, W. S. Jones, C. McPhedran, J. R. Doak, J. Hunter, R. Davie, A. M. Copland, A. Gibson, W. Gray, J. F. K. Jamieson, W. Blackwood, J. Parry and R. J. Edgar. Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P., wrote enclosing a donation of £3/3/- as a special prize to the competitor, who, not having won any previous prize at the South Canterbury Ploughing Match showed best general workmanship plus the best turned-out team of four or more horses. As there was already a prize for this class, it was decided that Mr Burnett should be interviewed, with a view to awarding the prize in some other class. Messrs W. J. Doak and G. Evans advised that they should be pleased to officiate as judges at the ploughing match. Two challenge cups were donated, one by the Rosewill district, the other by the Woolbrokers’ and Auctioneers’ Association. Other cups were donated by Andrews and Beaven (Hart-Parr Cup); Mrs A. Fraser, Mrs J. B. Storrier A. B. Annand, Mrs W. J. Clarke and J. Bassett, South Canterbury Power Board and Mr A. Hutton (£l/1/- for the dog trials). Mr W. S. Jones donated a fat sheep for the winner of the sheep guessing competition, and Mr G. T. Wardell donated a case of whisky. It was decided that the secretary and the chairman of the Grounds Committee should appoint the stewards. A vote of thanks to all those who had donated prizes was carried by acclamation. A motion was carried that all ploughing must be six inches deep, and that the stewards after so many rounds measure the depth of the furrow.
