MACKENZIE WIN FOR W AIM ATE. The return match between the Mackenzie and Waimate Sub-Unions was played at Waimate yesterday, and resulted in a win for the home team by 7 points to 5. The weather conditions were unfavourable, steady drizzling rain, after several nights of frosts, made the ground treacherous and the ball difficult to handle. The result was that the game was mostly a forward one. though some good back play was witnessed considering the state of the ground and ball. The game was a very even one, with Mackenzie forwards slightly superior, but the Waimate backs were more dangerous. Carleton especially played a good game, and won the game for his side with a potted goal. The teams were as follows: — Mackenzie. T. Pick', ring J. Bracken F. Black J. Keenan A. Dale P. Keenan. E. Perry. S. Williams M., Me Vie W. Robertson H. Guy J. McVie. M. Buckley J. Talbot G. Giddings (captain). Waimate. N. Hodges J. Blackaby W. Deady W. Boyne R. Carleton L. Milsom. A. Johnson A. Pearce H. Baxter C. Veitch D. Wraight E Anderson M. Miller D. Paterson W. Willetts (captain). The Play. Waimate kicked off and play settled in Mackenzie territory, the ball not reaching the half-way flag until 15 minutes of the spell had gone. From a line-out Deady put in a good run, but P. Keenan saved. Waimate returned to the attack with a passing rush amongst the backs, and for an infringement were awarded a free kick. D. Paterson took the shot, which went ouatside the posts. Play settled at half-:way, where several scrums took place. Carleton secured, but kicked too hard and Mackenzie forced. Waimate continued to attack, and Black returned a dangerous position by tackling Blackaby. A free kick to Mackenzie was lined by Giddings. and from the throw in Black and P. Keenan carried the ball for the first time past halfway, where play hung for some time. An exchange of kick took place, till Pickering fcunc’ the line in Waimate & 25. P. Keenan and J. McVie carried play to near the Waimate line, but Johnson relieved with a good kick to the line. Mackenzie continued to press, and from a loose scrum. J. McVie passed to Giddings, to Dale, and then to P. Keenan, who beat Milsom and scored in a handy position. Giddings, converted. McKenzie 5. Wairriate 0. Soon after resumption Deady

Waimate were awarded a free kick, which Paterson centred, and P. Keenan was caught in possession. Dale, however, was handy and relieved. Carleton shortly after secured, but kicked too hard, ard Mackenzie fpreed. Good play by J. McVie and Dale* the latter dummying well, carried play to Waimate territory, but Paterson returned to half-way. Carleton again secourd but Pickering saved by finding touch. Talbot and Williams headed a good rush which Block ended by finding the line at half-way. Good passing bv Johnson, Carleton and Deady, saw Blackaby knock-on. From a scrum Perry (Mackenzie) secured and carried down field, but the movement was stopped for an infringement, and a scrum was ordered in Waimate territory. Johnson came round the blind c ide to let Blackaby away, and he found touch. Play remained at midwav for some time. Good work by Giddings, J. McVev and Williams now took pl°ce, but a free kick was awarded to Waimate which Paterson put out near Mackenzie’s 25. A pass by Johnson to Carleton was intercepted, and the Mackenzie forwards rushed olay to half-way. Shortly after the ball came to Carleton, who found the line at the corner. From the line out Veitch nearly cot over, but Roberston relieved. The best play of the day then took place. Carleton secured and passed to Johnson, to Milsom. to Deady, who sent the ball in again to Blackaby, to Deady again, then on to Anderson, Paterson and Bavne. the last named running round Bracken to score a splendid trv well out. Paterson’s kick failed. Halftime was called with the scroe:— Mackenzie 5 Waimate 3

Second Half. Mackenzie kicked off. and Johnson found the line between the 25 flag and half-way. Play settled in mid-field until Veitch dribbled through and put the ball out at the corner in Mackenzie territory. From the line-out, Carleton marked and attempted to drop-kick a goal, but missed. Tight work followed, and from a scrum Deady cut in, but was well tackled by P. Keenan. From loose play, Paterson handed the ball to Carleton, who dropped a goal, making the score Waimate 7; Mackenzie 5. A dangerous rush by Waimate forwards was checked by Pickering, who found the line. Even play followed, the ball eventually going out at half-way. A good kick by Blackaby was followed up by Carleton, who caught Giddings in possession, secured the ball, and found the line in Mackenzie’s 25. From a scrum. Willetts broke through to Mackenzie’s 25, but Buckley and Williams returned to mid-field. From a line-out, Carleton kicked and Baxter, following up, smothered Pickering’s return, and placed Waimate on attack. They were awarded a free for off-side play, but Paterson's kick went outside. Carleton. Paterson and Blackaby returned to Mackenzie territory, the latter being pushed out. A good rush by J. and M. McVey and Robertson was stopped by Miller finding the line. Talbot shortly after came through the ruck, but Bayne saved for Waimate. Robertson kicked through, but Hodges secured and found touch. Mackenzie continue dto attack, but were met with solid defence. From a line-out, Anderson, Veitch and Pearce raised the' siege to half-way, where play hung for some time. Good work by Johnson put Waimate on attack, and Carleton’s kick was mulled by Pickering, but Giddings relieved. Several scrums took place in mid-field, in which Mac; nzie had the advantage, but they were unable to increase their score/ Time was soon after called with Waimate attacking. Waimate 7 Mackenzie .. 5 Mr W. Dench was referee. The Dinner. After the match both teams dined together, and later on a social hour was spent. After the loyal toast had been honoured- Mr Sawell, president of the Waimate Sub-Union- welcomed the Mackenzie team. Although the weather was so bad that he would not have been surprised had they not come, the game was a good one, and he was sorry the selectors of South Canterbury had not been presented to witness it. Mr Sawell had to leave to attend another meeting and Mr D. Keys replaced him in the chair. Mr J. O’Connor on behalf of the Mackenzie Sub-Union, commented upon the friendly relation that had existed between the two unions for a number of years, and exhorted them to stick together and not be discouraged by the lack of enthusiasm from which both unions were suffering at present. Mr F. Geaney manager of the Mackenzie team spoke in a similar strain, and thanked their opponents for the generous treatment meted out to them. In his opinion the better team won, although there was little to choose between them. Mr Winning spoke on behalf of the Waimate Sub-’Union. Appropriate toasts were honoured, and songs and humorous stories were given by several of those present. A pleasant gathering was brought to a close at 8 p.m., with a hearty vote of thanks to the chairman, followed by a verse of the National Anthem.
