TEMUKA TO TIMARU ROAD RACE. EIG ENTRIES RECEIVED. The following entries have been received by the Timaru Harrier Management Committee for the Temuka-to-Timaru road race, to take place on Saturday ne* t: — Christchurch Harrier Club (17). Presbyterian Harrier Club, Christchurch (3). Methodist Harrier Club, Christchurch (2). Baptist Harrier Club, Christchurch (3). St. Kilda Harrier Club, Dunedin (1). Civil Service Harrier Club, Dunedin (6). Leith Harrier Club, Dunedin (6). Pacific Harrier Club, Dunedin (2). Methodist Harrier Club, Timaru (14). Presbyterian Harrier Club, Timaru (12). Anglican Harrier Club, Timaru (13). Timaru Harrier Club (6). Y.M.C.A., Timaru (2). The team’s race will be contested by teams of six men, the first five home in each team to count. The following trophies have been allotted:—Winning team, the C. W. Cameron Banner; competitor making fastest time, Fraser Cup and miniature; second fastest, Mr J. A. Norrie’s trophy; third fastest, Mr E. D. Mcßae’s trophy; fourth fastest, Mr W. Smith’s trophy. A special prize has been given by the Mayor for the first Timaru man home who is unplaced in the sealed handicap or the race. Every competitor finishing the course will receive a certificate of merit. For the sealed handicap, the trophies are:—Winner of race. Mr F. Gruhn’s trophy; second Mr J. A. Norrie’s trophy; third, Mr C. Don’s trophy; fourth. Mr J. F. Flanagan's trophy; fifth, “Timaru Herald” trophy. PROSPECTS DISCUSSED. A RECORD FIELD. Keen interest is being shown in Saturday’s race, which will commence at 3 p.m. from the Temuka Post Office, and will finish at the band rotunda at Caroline Bay. Almost 100 entries have been received from Dunedin, Christchurch, and the Timaru Clubs. This year’s race, for the first time, is run by the Timaru Combined Harriers Management Committee, aAd they are to be congratulated on the record number of entries, which is 96. against 78 last year, and 48 in 1928. This event is now one of the most popular harrier events of the South Island. Valuable trophies are being given, besides the Fraser Cup and the Cameron Banner. Mr Angland (the Mayor) has donated a special prize for the first local unplaced runner. Amongst the entries are most of the Canterbury and Otago champions; also holders of New Zealand championships. Last year’s winner, J. G. Barnes, who has been transferred from Christchurch to Dunedin, is again competing, but will run under the colours of Civil Service, Dunedin. He put up a fine performance last year, and made fastest time, 61min. 40 3-5 sec., beating his club-mate, G. L. Austin, by close on two minutes, and the Timaru champion, J. Eaton, by two ajid a half minutes. Saturday's

race will find keen competition for fastest time, in S. Anderson (Leith), B. M. Barrer (Christchurch), and J. Eaton (Timaru). who is again finding his best form.

The winner of the sealed handicap last year, J. H. Pledger (Dunedin), will again compete; also Pope (St. Kilda), who finished second.

Great interest is shown amongst the Timaru runners for the Mayor’s prize, and the following will no doubt be amongst those who will finish well up in the race: W. Taylor, R. Holmes, A. Hopkins, W. Keeiey, J. Kohler, R. J. Taylor, H. Preston, E. and L. Wilson, R. Lund, H. Cullimore.

The officials for to-morrow’s race are as follows: —Supervisor, Mr J. H. Norrie; starter, Mr E. D. Mcßae; timekeepers, Messrs* J. Fraser, W. Young, J. O’Leary; number stewards, Messrs C. W. Cameron. F. S. Cave, A. Foden; judges, Revs. C. W. Duncumb. A. J. H. Dow, Messrs J. H. Norrie, R. Sinclair, F. S. Cave, and E. Firkin; handicappers, Messrs A. D. Mcßae, A. Foden, G. Hetherington, R. Lund; official photographer, Mr J. Harris. There are also billeting, transport, and social committees.
