HARE DRIVE.
AT RANGITATA ISLAND. A hare drive, recently organised by the Committee of the Rangitata Island Hall, was a great success, many sportsmen coming from all over the district to take part in the day’s sport. Despite the fact that a snowstorm came on in the afternoon, the handsome total of 332 hares, and a number of rabbits, fell to the 48 guns which took part in the various drives. The ladies of the Island provided lunch at the school, and later a very welcome cup of tea was dispensed. Mr Sereles, of Timaru, on behalf of the visitors, expressed thanks to the ladies, and to all those who had helped to make the drive enjoyable. Mr Brodie suitably replied. Another successful drive was held on the Island on July 3, in aid of the Hall and Miniature Rifle Club combined. A great many visitors were present from Timaru, Geraldine, Orari and Temuka and surrounding districts, and a large tract of ground was shot over, about 80 guns taking part. The satisfactory total of 291 hares was bagged. The Island ladies provided lunch at Mr G. Tate’s residence, and later in the afternoon tea was partaoken of at the school. Mr Cain, on behalf of the visitors, thanked the ladies for their kind attention. Mr Northam suitably replied. At the school, Mr South paid a very high compliment to the ladies, and “For They are Jolly Good Fellows” was heartily sung.
