BOWLING.

THE NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, July 9. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Bowling Council opened this morning, Mr A. B. Oakey (Christchurch),, presiding. Considerable discussion was occasioned by the New Plymouth proposal that at the Dominion tourney next year rinks only should be played —that there should be a full week of sectional play on the two-life principle, and that separate singles and doubles should be played, North and South Islands, the winners of which should meet at the Dominion tourney. Mr Smart (N.P.) said the object in bringing the matter forward was on account of complaints about the length of tournaments. “I think pairs are the bugbear of the whole problem, and I consider that only singles and rinks should be placed,” said Mr J. Moyes (Timaru). It was resolved to discuss at a later date Mr Smart’s suggestions, with those of Mr Good (Christchurch, who held that a change in the date of the tournament, the system of play, and the effect of outer tournaments should be considered. Mr Pilkington, supporting the proposal, said the Dominion tourney at present was a test of endurance. Other remits on the same subjects were also considered. It was decided that the next Dominion tourney should start on January 12; that the first two days should be devoted to singles, the second two to pairs; that rinks should follow, and that three games per day should be played. It was resolved that time limits for play should be li hours for singles, 22 hours for pairs, and three hours for rinks. It was decided to accept an invitation to send a New Zealand team to Brisbane, to take part in the bowling carnival there next year. The numl*er of rinks was left to the executive to decide. There are now 324 registered clubs in the Dominion. The total membership is 16,313, an increase of 227 during the year.
