SIR JOSEPH WARD’S PASSING. When the news of Sir Joseph Ward’s passing was received in Geraldine, flags were flown half-mast on all the public buildings and banks. As a [ mark of respect, the school will be closed to-day, and basketball fixtures have been cancelled. The headmaster of the District High School (Mr A. F. Barrell) addressed the children yesterday on the work of the late Prime Minister. GOLF. The following were the best cards handed in for the Kerr, Quaich and Sharp Cup in this week’s play:— Ladies—Miss E. Parr, 6 down. Men —D. Macdonald, 2 down; W. Webb, 2 down; P. G. Withers, 3 down; E. R. Beckett, 4 down; E. Scott, 5 down; H. Bennett, 5 down. On Saturday the final of the Tripp Cup will be contested. A BUSY DAY. Compared with recent market days, an exceptionally busy day was experienced in Geraldine yesterday. This may be accounted for by two reasons: a large number visited Christchurch at the week-end and left their shopping until to-day, and the commencement of winter sales at various business houses. Many of those in town listened with keen interest to the Maori-British match over the wireless. FOOTBALL. After a lapse of five weeks, in the case "of one team, and four weeks for the others, Geraldine teams will take the field again on Saturday. Teams are as follows: Third Grade (v. Reserves: Patrick, Wills. “ THE COCOA CLUB.’’ A cocoa club has been formed at the Geraldine School, and pupils of both departments may obtain, a cup of cocoa each day for 3d a week. The headmaster reports that the privilege is being availed of by about 35 pupils. The Optical Specialist of John ,R. Procters, Ltd. (New Zealand’s leading opticians), Christchurch, will be visiting Geraldine next Wednesday, 16th instant, and may be consulted on all defects of eyesight (glasses) at the Crown Hotel, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. . FOURTEEN DEGREES OF FROST. Bitterly cold weather has been experienced during the past few days, although sunny wintry days have followed. Fourteen degrees of frost—the highest recorded at the Geraldine primary school—were registered yesterday morning, and cold conditions prevailed throughout the day. Conditions became milder at night. HOCKEY. The following will represent the Southern hockey team in their match against Union, at Geraldine, at 3 p.m.:—J. Buckley, P. Russell, A. Bryant, J. Morrison, D. Turner, L. Woods, C. Knight, L. At a meeting of the Geraldine District High School Committee, there were present—Messrs A. M. Fyfe (chairman), A. V. Wright, F. H. Wallach, G. Knibb, A. South, J. Grierson, C. Armstrong, and Rev. W. J. Couling. A letter was received in connection with the Christchurch Winter Show, suggesting a special school excursion. —The matter was left in the hands of the headmaster. Miss Crawford, infant mistress, wrote applying for three days’ leave to visit schools in Christchurch in search of up-to-date methods.—Permission was granted. A letter was received from the Director of Dental Clinics, Wellington, asking when the clinic at Geraldine would be ready for use.—The chairman reported that he had replied that the architect expected to have it ready about July 13th. A letter was received from the Cancer Research Committee stating that the quota for the Geraldine school was £6/10/-.—Permission was granted the headmaster to take up a collection in the school. The Education Board wrote approving the installation of electric light in the headmaster’s house. It was decided to hold a working bee at the primary school on Thursday to remove soil. Referring to the proposed agricultural experimental plots at the secondary department of the school, the chairman reported that the Farmers’ Union had set up a sub-committee to confer with the School Committee. A promise to plough the land had been received.—lt was decided that the headmaster should interview Mr McUillivray during* his visit to Geraldine on Thursday. Headmaster’s Report. The headmaster (Mr A. F. Barrell) reported that the attendance at the two schools was as follows:—Primary

I department, roll 241, average 214; secondary department, roll 62, average 59.4. The roll number in the primary department showed an increase of three. Work was proceeding with the dental clinic. The clocks throughout the school had been attended to, and seats had been erected on the northern side of the school building. The school concerts had resulted in a profit of £4l/13/6, of whiefi £B/14/9 had been paid out for last year’s prizes, leaving a balance of £32/18/9 for future, use. The grounds in the secondary school had been inspected during the month by two members of the Education Board (Messrs Hughes and Armitage), accompanied by the Board’s assistant architect (Mr C. Porter), and a plan had been drawn up for* the lay-out. The two Canterbury agricultural instructors visited the ground later and made an individual report. The report was adopted. PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr C. C. Leitch, instructor in agriculture at Christchurch, and Mr R. McGillivray, Fields Superintendent of the Department of Agriculture, arrived in Geraldine yesterday. They will give lectures to-day on “Pasture Improvement” and “Crop Certification and Improvement.” At a meeting of the Geraldine School Committee, the chairman (Mr A. M. Fyfe) drew attention to the fact that Mr T. Hughes had retired from the Canterbury Education Board after many years of service. It was decided to pass a vote of thanks to Mr Hughes for the great amount of work he had done in the interests of education.
