WELLINGTON RACING CLUB. MANGANI WINS STEEPLECHASE. By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, July 8. The Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting opened at Trentham to-day In brilliant weather. The track was soft, but in the best order for years at this period of the year. Thrilling finishes marked the chief events. In the Wellington Steeplechase Mangani beat Aurora Borealis by a head, and in the Whyte Handicap Best Friend beat High Pitch by a nose. The favourites had a bad day, but the betting was well maintained. The totalisator handled £42,472/10/-, being only £2912 less than the opening day last year. The attendance for an off day was well up to the average. L. Mathieson, rider of Zippor in the first race, broke a collarbone when his mount fell, but this was the only casualty during the day.
