FAIRLIE.

SCHOOL COMMITTEE. At the monthly meeting of the Committee of the Fairlie District High School the following members were present:—Messrs C. J. Talbot (chairman), J. A. Fraser, R. Manchester, A. Cooper, H. Carlton, J. Crichton, W. Scott and G. Lyons. The chairman reported that a series of fortnightly socials had been inaugurated in aid of school funds. The staff had undertaken the running of these socials, and a good commencement had been made. The proposed dance in connection with the Leitch Cup, competed for by the different ridings in the Mackenzie County had been cancelled after consultation with the committee of the A. and P. Society. It was probable that the Society itself would in future years, take steps to suitably present to winners the principal trophies held for competition at the Easter shows. The Public Celebration Committee had decided on preliminary steps in connection with the jubilee to be celebrated in midsummer, and a further meeting was being called. Correspondence was read from the Board relative to improvements to the drainage from the Technical School buildings, and provision for a winter supply of drinking water for the pupils.

A circular letter was read inviting school children to attend the Christchurch Winter Show in August. Arrangements had been made with the Railway Department for excursion trains to be run where necessary. The headmaster (Mr R. Watson), reported that the roll number in the primary department was 211, and in the secondary division 34, with average attendance of 196 and 34 respectively. Winter games with other schools were in progress. Basketball matches had been held with Albury and Pleasant Point and football with Albury, Kilnbell and Pleasant Point. In all cases enjoyable contests had resulted, and provision for transport and for entertainment had been satisfactory. Mrs W. Scott had presented a basketball to the school, while footballs had been given by the Mackenzie SubUnion and the Fairlie Football Club. Swimming prizes had been presented during the month. The school had taken advantage of the railway excursion to Timaru on the occasion of the visit of the British football team, and Mr Carlton with various members of the staff had assisted in marshalling the pupils. A vote of thanks was passed to those who had provided cars for the transport of teams for the different matches, and to those who had supplied prizes and material for games and swimming. The question of purchasing a section for gardening purposes was again discussed, and it was decided to make inquiries regarding the price of an adjoining section. The visitors for the month (Messrs Fraser and Crichton), reported in detail on the condition of the grounds and buildings. Several matters for attention were referred to the incoming visitors, Messrs Carlton and Scott for attention.
