NOT CASE FOR PROBATION.
CAR THIEF SENT TO GAOL. By Telegraph—Press Association NEW PLYMOUTH, July 8. “Probation is quite out oi the question,” said Mr Harper, S.M.. to-day, when Harry Payne (23), pleaded guilty lo converting to his own use at Napier a car valuer! at £SOO, the property of Lewis John Blundell; and to theft of benzine at Talaga Bay, and a razor at Whengara. The police stated that accused took the car on July 4, and drove it to Ruatoria. w r here he was arrested when returning to Gisborne. Fortunately he did not damage the car. It was stated that accused had been fined £5 in June 1929, for a similar offence, and had two convictions for theft. The Magistrate said people’s property must be protected, or there was no knowing when some one’s valuable car would be ruined. Accused was sentenced to six months hard labour for theft of benzine; three months hard labour for illegal conversion of the car, the sentences to be concurrent. He was convicted and discharged for theft of the razor.
