FARMERS’ UNION. A meeting of the Temuka branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held yesterday. Present —Messrs A. J. Davey (chairman), L. V. Talbot, W. J. Lyon, W. Buchan, F. Smith, J. O. J. Oliver, A. Bisdee, J. A. Paterson, G. J. Gould, D. J. Pemberton, and A. E. Dobson. The chairman stated that, as instructed at the annual meeting, the secretary (Mr B. Hughes) had forwarded a resolution to the Dominion Conference, asking that vendors’ names be announced at stock sales. So far, they did not know how the resolution had fared, but this would probably be made known the following day at Timaru, where delegates to the conference would report. The information asked for in regard to meat prices was now on hand, and he would be only too pleased to allow members to peruse the report. There was only one other matter he wished to refer to, and that was in regard to the blowfly parasite asked for from the Cawthron Institute. Mr Davey said that the parasite had come to hand, and had been handed to Mr Talbot. Mr Talbot said that he had followed the instructions given, and the parasites had all hatched out, and would now probably carry themselves on. The experiment appeared quite successful, and it was hoped good results would be had. Mr Davey then extended a welcome to Mr L. J. McGregor, representing the Otago Fanners’ Mutual Fire Insurance ‘Co. He invited Mr McGregor to explain the aims of his company. Mr McGregor did this at length, and returned thanks for having been given the opportunity of being present. Correspondence. At the annual meeting of the branch several members spoke in strong terms regarding the herding of pigs with sheep in the Temuka cattle yards. They pointed out that the practice was an extremely dangerous one, and the secretary was directed to ask that it be not allowed in future. To a letter to this effect, the stationma ter (Mr F. H. McKeown) wrote to yesterdays meeting acknowledging receipt, and stating that the matter had been brought under the notice of the District Traffic Manager, Dunedin. Mr Hughes stated that he had been verbally told by the stationmaster that pigs had not been herded in the yards, but that possibly some pigs had been left there overnight. A member: “They were there all right.” The letter was received. Messrs G. Fletcher (Hilton) and W. I. Tozer (Waitohi) wrote resigning from the branch. After a short discussion, it was decided that two members get in touch with the members named above, with a view to asking them to reconsider their decision. Women’s Division. The secretary stated that he had received a letter from a lady in the Temuka district, offering support if a women’s branch of the Union was formed. The chairman said the matter was one calling for special attention. It would be a pity if a branch was formed but not supported, but he believed good support would be forthcoming. Mr Oliver considered it would be worth while making an effort to form a branch. Other members spoke in similar vein, giving the opinion mat Temuka would thus be kept in line with other centres. It was considered a braneh would be well supported. Mr Oliver suggested a meeting with the Timaru Women’s branch, to ascertain their views and what support would be given. It was decided to call a meeting of ladies interested, and ask the president of the Timaru Women’s branch to be present. Mr Davey and Mr Oliver were deputed to make arrangements. General. Mr Lyon inquired what steps were intended to be taken in regard to bird poisoning this year. He though it should be gone on with. It was pointed out that supplies of poisoned wheat could be obtained locally, the C.F.C.A. being the distributing agents for the Geraldine County Council. I The chairman inquired if an effort could not be maVi to increase their membership. The present was a fairly quiet period, and perhaps individual members could make an effort to secure new members. It was decided to send representations to the South Canterbury executive, asking their views as to securing the services of a canvasser to canvass all' districts.
