AUTOMOBILE ASSM.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the executive of the South Canterbury Automobile Association was held last night. Present—Messrs W. H. Orbell (vice-president, in the chair), F. S. shrimpton, J. H. Don, J. M. Jenkins, H. A. Innes-Jones, A. P. Kelland, C. S. Bruce and S. G. McClelland. An apology was received from the president (Mr J. C. Palliser), and sympathy was expressed with him in his illness. The Waimate Automobile Association wrote in reply to the South Canterbury Association’s letter, stating that the dip in the road near Morven would shortly receive attention. The Southern Association did not agree that a certain advertising sign did not obscure the view, and did not consider any action was desirable. The suggestions made in the North Island that the petrol tax should be increased to relieve counties from finding their share of the cost of maintenance and construction of highways, was discussed, and it was decided on the motion of Mr Shrimpton to strenuously protest agaoinst any increase in motor taxation. The Ashburton Committee of the Canterbury Automobile Association wrote asking if the Association would contribute half the cost of taking a census of traffic over the Rangitata Bridge for a period of at least one week. The object in having this work carried out was to provide some data in connection with the proposal to erect a new bridge over the jlangitata at Ealing. ; It was agreed not to contribute to the proposal on the grounds that the time , was not opportune. Advice was received that the quarterly meeting of the S.I.M.U. would be held at Oamaru on June 27 and Messrs Ritchie, Jenkins, Shrimpton and McClelland were appointed the Association’s delegates. Mrs A. Hayhurst, Miss E. M. Knight and Messrs C. Lyon, P. Vesty, W. H. Chalmers, and J. Gaffaney were elected new members.

Accounts amounting to £39/16/-, were passed for payment.
