WAIMATE.

WINTER SHOW. A meeting of the Waimate Winter and Poultry Show was held In Mr Barford's room. Present—Mr T. Wilce (president), and Messrs A. Allington, J. Roberts, A. Segar, F. Creba, J. Carbis, W. C. Creba, J. Johnson, A. Johnson. Mr Roberts reported that Mr Goodwin would be in Waimate to judge the fruit section. The secretary was instructed to forward a letter of sympathy to Mr Barford in his illness, and to Mr A. Cordener in the loss of his wife. It was decided that in the novice classes entries be received by novices in both novice and open classes.’ It was decided to approach the Borough Council in regard to permitting an advertising screen across the street. Mr Wilce was accorded a vote of thanks for his generous offer in donating a trio of white leghorns valued £3 3s, for the guessing competition; also to Messrs G. Curtis for 10/6, for most points in white leghorns, all classes; to Mr R. Woods for 10/- for most points in Yorkshire canaries, open, and 10/for Norwich open; to Mr E. Bray for 5/- for best bantam in novice class; to Mr J. H. Beattie for 10/6 worth of goods for barred Rocks all classes; to Mr Burton, for 10/6 most points in Minorcas, open; to Mr J. Keinan for 5/- most points in Hamburgs, and 5/for best dessert apples. PERSONAL. Mr A. C. Johnston, of Invercargill, who has been transferred to the Waimate branch of the Bank of New Zealand, has taken up duty, replacing Mr W. G. Melton, transferred to Dunedin. Mr Johnston is a brother of L. Johnston, of All Black fame. He was a member of the Invercargill Pirates Club, and will be an acquisition to the Waimate Old Boys team. FOOTBALL. At Manchester Park yesterday afternoon. Old Boys defeated Southern in the senior grade by 10 to nil The Play. Southern won the toss and kicked off with the sun at their backs. Play remained in neutral territory for some time, until from a line-out Deady kicked well down the field. Hodges (Old Boys) returned to the line at the 25. From a throw-in, Milsom cut off a pass. Olcl Boys now pressed, but Moffat dropped a pass. Bartley then put in a good kick, Moffat saving for Old Boys. From a ruck Carleton carried on, the ball eventually going out at half-way. Hodges, full-back for Old Boys, did some good defensive work for his side. From a scrum Deady (Southern) found the line in Old Boys 25. but soon after Carleton with a hefty kick landed the ball out in Southerns 25. Numerous scrums followed, until Sam ways put Southern in an attacking position by finding the line in Old Boys 25. From the line-out Carleton secured and passed to Dobbs, who dropped the ball, and Granger relieved. Play was rushed to Southerns 25, but good work by Willetts relieved the pressure. Willetts went close to the Old Boys’ line, and the Blues continued to attack for some time, till Grainger found the line between his 25 and half-way. From a line-out Grylls broke through with the ball at his toes, and Carleton secured and put the ball out in Southern territory. Shortly after, Carleton again secured and nearly scored, but hung on too long and his pass went astray. Old Boys continued to press, and after several scrums under the goal posts Old Boys were awarded a free kick and Hodges placed a goal. Old Boys 3. Southern 0. Soon after the kick-off Old Boys were forced. For an infringement, Veitch had a kick at goal from five yards inside half-way, but missed. Play was returned to Old Boys 25, and Southern attempted passing, but play went across the field. For Old Boys handling the ball in the scrum Southern were awarded a free kick, but for a man in front a scrum was ordered, and Carleton found touch at half-way. Another free kick to Southern was taken by Deady, but fell short, and Dodds returned to half-way. Half-time, was called with the score Old Boys 3, Southern 0. From the kick-off play in neutral terirtory followed. A rush by Old Boys was terminated by Dodds kicking too hard, and Southern forced. From a loose scrum Moffat picked up smartly and made a good run into Southern territory. Southern were awarded a free for offside, which Old Boys returned to half-way. Horn, a Southern player, at this stage left the field, having apparently strained the muscles of his neck. Smith and Collett put in good work for Old Boys, the ball coming to Carleton, who attempted to pot a goal, but missed. Old Boys continued to attack, but Dobbs kicked too hard, enabling Southern to force. Old Boys continued to press, Grylls shining out. but he dropped the ball and McNeill relieved for Southern. Grainger, Carleton and Walker continued to do good work for Old Boys, and Willetts for Southern defended strongly. Even play followed until a free kick to Old Boys went out in Southern territory. From the line-out Deady (Southern) put in a good run, but his pass went astray near Old Boys’ line. Hodges secured from a scramble, and found the line near half-way, extricating Old Boys from a dangerous position. The j Blues attacked again, but were unable to finish their efforts, the tackling on both sides being good. Southern were awarded a free kick, but Veitch’s ! attempt fell short. Play was now transferred to Southerns’ 25. where Carleton picked up and after beating several Blues dropped a splendid goal. Old Boys 7, Southern 0. An exchange of kicks ended with Southern attacking, but Moffat and Coppett returned play to the Southern line, where a free kick was awarded them, and the ball went cut at the 25 flag. Old Boys returned to the attack and from a scrum Carleton secured and passed to Walker, but the ball went astray, and a free kick to Southern soon after was lined by C. Smith between 25 and half-way. , Old Boys kept up the pressure, and from a scrum Grainger passed to Carleton, who passed to Dodds, and enabled him to run across to score. The kick at goal was taken by Walker, who 1 missed. Time was called spon after without further score. Old Boys 10 , Southern 0 Mr Denham was referee. JUNIOR GAMES. The junior games resulted as follows: Old Boys 12 beat Southern 0. Southern could field only ten players. Huimai 14 beat School 10. THIRD GRADE. 6 beat Old Boys 5.
