UPPER WAITOHI.

SCHOOL CONCERT. A successful concert was held in the Upper Waitohi School on June 11th. The weather was fine, and the Schodl, which was decorated with flowers, greenery and paper streamers, was packed to the door. The programme was given by the children, and the manner in which every item was given reflected credit on them and on their teacher, Miss Cruickshank. The object was to raise funds for the purchase of a gramophone for the school. The programme was as follows: “Welcome Song,” school children; recitation, “The Old Umbrella,” Joan Watson, Alan Stoakes and Billy Hutchinson; duet, “Will You Marry Me?” Vera Cowles and Alan Draffin; drill to music, senior boys; recitation, “Tommy's Dreadful Dream,” Georgie Mcllwrick; acc-ordeon solo, Andrew Dick; “Japanese Fan Song,” senior girls; recitation, "A Birdie Always Tells,” Isobel Watson; song, Vera Cowles; short play, “Paying a Visit,” Margaret Pearse, Katie Pagan and Andrew Dick; songs, “Fishing” and “Sneezles,” the school children; dialogue, “Dolly’s Doctor,” Joan Watson and Jim Crombie; accordeon solo, Andrew Dick; song, “I Don’t Want to Piay in Your Yard,” Margaret Pearse, Lilias Crombie and Vera Cowles; recitation, “Porridge,” Michael O’Connell; wand drill, junior girls; character song, “Urchins We,” Andrew Dick, Eddy Draffin and Alec. Crombie; recitation, “The Frog and the Fly,” Jim Crombie; song, “The Hat Shop,” girls; drill, “Awkward Squad,” junior boys; play, “At the Photographers.”

At the close of the programme, the chairman (Mr Crombie) proposed votes of thanks to Miss Cruickshank and the children for the excellent entertainment, and thanked parents who had helped in arranging dresses for the children, and the ladies who had supplied the supper. He then called on Mrs Dick to make a small presentation on behalf of the committee to Miss Cruickshank.

Mrs Dick made a presentation of a bouquet of flowers, and a box of sweets amidst loud applause and musical honours. The National Anthem was then sung, and supper was handed round.

The school was cleared for dancing, which was kept going merrily till the small hours of the morning, music being supplied by Mr M. Geaney, while extras were played by Misses F. Pagan and K. Mclntosh. Mr J. Coll was M.C., and one of the most enjoyable entertainments held in Upper Waitohi was brought to a close by the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”
