FAIRLIE LIBRARY.

INCREASED EXPENDITURE DESIRED. BALANCE SHEET QUESTIONED. * When discussing the annual report of the Library Committee at yesterday’s meeting of the Mackenzie County Council, Mr A. F. Campbell asked why the grant this year had been £lßl/15/11, while in 1927 it had been only £IOO. He wanted to know by whose authority the increase had been granted. The chairman (Mr C. J. Talbot), stated that Fairlie library was one of the finest in the Dominion for a country district, and compared favourably with many of the town libraries. During the past year they had spent £l3 on alterations to the buildings, while they had lost the support of Mr R. L. Banks, who had contributed quite a sum out of his own pocket. It was found at the end of the year that £125 was not sufficient to meet the expenses and the committee decided to square the accounts. The sum of £l5O was desired to carry on the work durir t the coming year. -Jr Campbell said that in his opinion the increased expenditure should have been put before the Council, and that was the reason he had taken exception to it. The chairman said that the state of the library finances was not realised till the end of the year, and the committee thought it advisable to square matters up. The library levy was paid on a proportionate basis by the ridings. Mr G. Murray: “I understand that Albury pays nothing to the library.” The chairman: “Albury contributes to a library of its own.” Mr Murray said that Tekapo Ridinghad enough to do to pay for its roads, and should stand out of library con- | tributions. j The chairman: “Your ratepayers use Mr Murray: “How many?” Mr T. J. Seay: “Quite a number. All persons below the Pass are members.” The chairman moved that the report be adopted, and that the grant this year be £l5O. This was seconded by Mr Campbell. Mr Murray: “I move that the sum be £100.” This was not seconded, the motion being carried. Mr Murray dissenting.
