At Indianapolis, in the presence of 165,000 spectators, Billy Arnold, a youthful Chicago driver, won the 500 miles automobile race to-day, in 4hr. 48min. He averaged more than 100 miles per hour. Arnold won 55,000 dollars in cash prizes. Paul Marshall, a Detroit mechanic, was killed, when the machine in which he was driving, with his brother C. Y. Marshall, crashed into a retaining wall. Billy Arnold won with an average speed of 100.448 miles per, hour, right throughout, threading around wreck after wreck of opponents piled up, and car after car was dragged to the pits. Paul Marshall’s car blew a tyre before leaping into a retaining wall. He died upon removal to hospital, where C. Y. Marshall lies with broken jaws and numerous internal injuries. He is not expected to live. Six other contenders were injured moie or less seriously. Never before in the speedway’s history has there been such a succession of crashes. At the beginning of the first lap six machines figured in a pile up. The leading cars showed the expected stamina, providing a thrilling race. Arnold, despite protestations that he was “all right,” was immediately taken to hospital for treatment and rest. Ten drivers took prizes. Eleven cars were wrecked in crashes, and several were forced out for other reasons. At Newberry track at Winchester, in Indiana, a racing car ran off the dirt speed way into the crowd, killing four persons and injuring at least thirty, of which one resulted fatally.
