The weather was gloriously fine for the opening day of the Dunedin winter meeting, but the attendance was not large, and there was a considerable shrinkage in the totalisator investments. The fact that a trotting meeting is to follow next week, giving Dunedin for the first time five days’ racing almost on end, was a factor in this, and the two days’ break between the first and second days of the meeting caused many visitors to postpone their trip till Monday. Tuesday, no doubt, will see better returns, but both meetings are likely to be effected by the surfeit of racing. The Riverton Cup winner, Red Sea, by the Waimateowned sire Valkyrian, accounted for the Birthday Handicap, after a pretty race. Top Gear had the way made easy for him by mishaps, but it looked as if Radiate was the only one of the unlucky ones who might have defeated him. The Orari three-year-old Inevit-

able secured a decisive win in the Tradesmen’s, and Full Feather carried top weight to victory round a big field in the Winter Handicap. The uncertain Australian Amorist ran one of his best races in the hurdles, and had most of the field scratching in their efforts to keep near him. Opening Event. Loughrea, who had split a hoof, and Hyperion retired from the Hunters’ Steeplechase, and in a field of eight French Fleet 571 and Red Heather 461 were the popular picks. Hillman, Wairio, Koremata and Red Heather led down the back, but Kuku showed the way over the water jump. Coming to the stands, Koremata took charge and opened up a gap of fifteen lengths from Red Heather, Kuku and French Fleet, and they ran in that order until nearing the far turn, where Koremata came to grief. Kuku then went on from Red Heather and French Fleet, and jumping correctly, won by a dozen lengths from Red Heather, who was eight lengths clear of French Fleet. Mataipuke and Hillman, at long intervals, were the only others to get round, but Wairio was unlucky in being stopped at the double by a riderless horse.

Favourite Scores. Eighteen lined up for the Brighton Handicap.* and backers displayed a preference for Ranelagh 781, Straightcourse 492. and Hounslow 478. All began pretty well except Leading Boy. who lost a lot of ground. Remindful, Impertinence and Fair Exchange were first to show, and at the far turn Fair Exchange was leading from Remindful and Impertinence, the trio being just clear of Hounslow, Nightmaid and Vinegrove. There was not much change till a furlong from home, where Ranelagh ran up on the outside and won by just over a length from Fair Exchange, who defeated Impertinence by a head. Tembroney was a neck away, with Vinegrove next. Straightcourse was one of the last to finish. A Keen Contest. Arikiwai was installed a good favourite for the Birthday Handicap, carrying £135 more than Waterline. There was a big drop in the figures then to Pink Note, Black Mint and Red Sea, who were pretty evenly backed. Pink Note was a bit troublesome at the start, but eventually a good despatch was made. Black Mint was first to break the line, and led past the stand on terms with Waterline, the pair being followed by Arikiwai, Pink Note and Circulation. At the mile Black Mint had drawn clear of Waterline, then came Arikiwai, Circulation, Pink Note and Red Sea. It was the same at the six furlongs, so far as the order was concerned, but the field had bunched. Circulation and Red Sea moved up from the far turn, and as they swung into the straight Circulation and Waterline were clear of Pink Note, Black Mint, Red Sea and Arikiwai, who were in a bunch. Circulation retired commencing the last furlong, where Red Sea challenged Waterline, and Camisader came fast from the rear. A nice race ended in Red Sea winning by over half a length from Waterline, who beat Camisader by a neck. Pink Note was another half length away, with Circulation next. Money Mine, last year’s winner, was last to finish, but he was so sore that not many people fancied him.

Top Gear Again. Betting was well distributed in the Otago Steeplechase, Top Gear being first choice, £BS above Radiate, with Night Raid the outsider. Coming to the stand the first time, Top Gear and Radiac were leading from Double Soult and Radiate. Everything went well till the second sod wall was reached, where ; all were bunched except Snowfall, but Kaikahu and Radiac came to grief. At the far turn, Night Raid and Top Gear were just in advance of Double Soult and Radiate, and at the stand double, with a round to go, Top Gear and Double Soult were about two lengths ahead of Radiate and Night Raid, with Snowfall beginning to make up a bit of ground. At the big sod wall Snowfall was stopped by a riderless horse. With a mile to go, Radiate took charge, but almost immediately slipped and fell on the flat. Double Soult tired a bit further on, and the issue was left to Top Gear and Night Raid. Top Gear drew clear at the water jump and came on to win comfortably by two lengths from the Orari horse. Double Soult cantered in 100 yards behind the others, being the only other to finish. Top Gear has now started five times over fences, and has an unbeaten record of four wins and a dead-heat. Tradesmen’s Handicap. Inevitable 964, Great Star 966, Rin Tin Tin 837, and Full Fling 667. were the most fancied in the Tradesmen’s Handicap. Great Star, Inevitable, Full Fling and First Raid all began well, and at the far turn Full Fling, Great Star, Inevitable, First Raid and Caterpillar was the order. Great Star, Full Fling, Rin Tin Tin, First Raid and Inevitable were the leaders at the home turn, and half way up the straight Inevitable forged through on the rails and won by nearly two lengths from Great Star, who was half a length in front of Lucky Light. The last-named finished very fast, and just cut First Raid out of a place. Rin Tin Tin was next. Amorist Sets Hot Pace. Betting was well distributed on the June Hurdles, Amorist 783, Craigmore 768, Heather Lad 643, Pangolin 534, and Antrim Boy 474, being the top numbers. Amorist got to the front coming to the first hurdle and increased his lead at the jump owing to the others being crowded. Leaving the straight Amorist was clear of Craigmore, Pangolin, Gayoma and Guncase, and going down the back he set such a hot pace that he had the field well strung out. Paris fell at the jump near the seven furlongs when making a forward move. At the far turn, Amorist was half a dozen lengths clear of Craigmore, who was followed by Antrim Boy and Heather Lad. Amorist was never challenged, and won by three lengths from Craigmore, who secured second money W a neck, after a great tussle with

Antrim Boy and Heather Lad. Guncase. Gayoma, Oriflamb and Exide came home in a bunch about three lengths further back. Semper Paratus Improves. The Gore Hack winner Palermo was made a solid favourite for the St. Clair Handicap, showing 1110 units, the others in most demand being Miss Bradbury 728, Miss Redowa 698, Flaxbird 496 and Bitractor 418. Tuku and Bitractor began smartly, but the lastnamed fell before going two furlongs. At the far turn Palermo took charge from Miss Redowa, but at the curve the favourite was joined by Semper Paratus, and they turned for home together, clear of a bunch piloted by Miss Redowa. Finishing with more resolution than he did at Ashburton, Semper Paratus defeated Palermo by a short half length. Meitui was a length and a half away, a neck in front of Jock o’ Hazeldean. Semper Paratus appeared to throw in the towel at Ashburton, but hung on well to-day under pressure. Top Weight’s Good Win. The West Coaster Smithereens wound up favourite in a field of sixteen in the Winter Handicap, with 889 chances, with strong support for Full Feather 691, Nedda-Sudden Storm 689. Glenrowan 661. Apache 635. Three or four others were in the four hundreds. The light was failing as the field ran down the back, but Stealth. Nedda. Smithereens and Apache were among the early leaders. At the far turn Stealth, Nedqla. Smithereens, Apache and Tardy were near the front, and Stealth led round the top from Salmo Salar. This pair turned for home followed by Apache and a bunch. Half way down the straight Full Feather was seen putting in a fast run from the outside, and the topweight got up to win by a good half length from Salmo Salar. who defeated Apache by a neck. Royal Game. Glenrowan and Stealth were all close up. Full Feather was running on so strongly at the end that a longer journey should not worry him.
