DUNEDIN. May 29. The weather was decidedly wintry at Wingatui this morning. A strong breeze charged with a tinge from the snow-capped hills confined the track attendance to those bent on business. Showers fell during the morning, but even the rain overnight did not seriously affect the state of the going on the course proper, where the ground was quite firm. Track work opened with Nedda and Dumblane running over six furlongs in Imin. 22 2-ssec., without being extended. Glenrowan and Sudden Storm left six furlongs behind in lmin. 23sec., and seven in lmin. 36 2-ssec. Salmo Salar and Bailance ran over six furlongs in lmin. 23 3-ssec. Stealth and Wingatui covered seven furlongs in lmin. 37sec., and the former seemed to have most in reserve at the finish. Waterline, Full Feather, Semper Paratus and Straightcourse were allotted nice striding work on the inside grass. Pink Note was allowed to stride along, and left a mile behind in lmin. 49sec. The Paper Money gelding is doing well, and may be found repeating his best form. Circulation and Camisader were responsible for a good gallop over a mile, which they cast behind in lmin. 49sec. The first furlong took 12 4-ssec, and both finished well with a good deal in reserve. Smithereens and Tuku were not fully i extended when doing seven furlongs in lmin. 37secs. Caterpillar was not fully spun out to gallop five furlongs in lmin. lOsec. Ravine could have clipped something off lmin. Bsec. over five furlongs. The most interesting work of the morning took place between Snowfall and Nightraid. E. Mackie was on Snowfall, and J. T. Humphries on Nightraid. They set sail at the big sod wall and both cleared it in beautiful style. Then came the post and rails, the ditch and sod wall, and then the post and rails on to the course proper. Both were allowed to stride along over the balance of a circuit, and at the finish Snowfall seemed to have most in reserve. Bitractor came on from Top Speed (who does not seem to be right) at the end of six furlongs in lmin. 20sec. Bitractor is a better horse on the track then he is in a race. A number of other horses did from useful to fairly fast work, but nothing to make the gallop worth recording. The wet weather of the past two days has not to any material extent affected the going . on the course proper. Unless heavy rain sets in. the going will be firm enough to suit any horse, and at the same time the sting will be out of the ground. CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB. TWO NEW COMMITTEEMEN. (Special to the “Herald.”) CHRISTCHURCH, May 29. There was an attendance of about 50 members at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club to-day. The election of the committee, in wnich there was a great deal of in- I

terest, resulted in Sir Charles Cliffcrjl and Mr A. T. Donnelly, replacing Mr R. Allen and Mr C. G. Dalgoty; while Mr Donnelly replaced Mr Dalgety as a steward.

The chairman, Mr H. A. Knight, in moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, referred to the satisfactory financial results. The past season had further emphasised the success of the New Zealand horses in Australia. Phar Lap and Night March had between them won practically all the .best events in Australia. They could not claim to have bred better horses in New Zealand than in Australia. but the climatic conditions were much better for rearing and natural feed, enabling New Zealand breeders to more than hold their own in this part of the world. It was gratifying to see the interest that was taken in the Club regarding the election of the committee. Some of the officials were probably nearing the retiring age, and a few young members were needed with new ideas, good or bad. 1-Ie would like members to bear in mind that the Canterbury Jockey Club had a past—a past that they were proud of. Times would change, and whoever had charge of the future of the Club he earnestly hoped that they would pursue and maintain the conditions which had hitherto obtained.

In seconding the motion, the treasurer, Mr George Gould, said that the Club had made gratifying progress. Only three or four years ago it had outside liabilities amounting „o £31.000 or £32.000. These had been reduced to £13.000. A few years ago he had recommended a cut in stakes. and that had been done, amounting to £7OOO a year. At that time the Club was paying £2OOO a year in interest; now it was paying only a third of that amount.

The report and balance sheet was adopted.

Projected alterations to the five and six furlongs tracks at the Riccarton racecourse were mentioned by Mr George Gould.

Mr Gould said that the present six- 1 furlong course was not very popular. i There was at present a big curve in the j five-furlong course, and the line of j sight was too parallel with the grand- j stand. The pronosal was to alter the 1 line a little, so that they would have a ; straight five furlongs. It was also j proposed to alter the six-furlong course, so that there would be a fur- j long straight before the bend was reached. If they did so the start of the six-furlong course would be nearer the Yaldhurst Road, and there would then be no necessity for a second winning post. CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB OFFICERS. By Telegraph—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH. May 29. The annual meeting of the Canterbury -Jockey Club was held to-day. There was interest in the election of the committee, as a ticket of new members was proposed, being supported on the ground as alleged that the Club needed new blood. .The officers elected were:—Chairman, H. A Knight; treasurer, G. Gould; stewards, Messrs L. G. D. Acland. J. S. Barrett, M. Bethell, A. T. Donnelly. A. S. Elworthy, G. Fulton, H. A. Knight. G. N. McLean, G. Rutherford. E. C. Studholme, D. W. Westenra. Sir Heaton Rhodes. Committee. Messrs L. G. D. Asland, J. S. Barrett, W. L. Clifford. W. Deans, A. T. Donnelly. A. S. Elworthy. G. Fulton, H. A. Knight, R. M. D. Morton. G. N. McLean. G. L. Rutherford, Sir Charles Clifford. THE TOTALISATOR TAX. REPLY TO MR POLSON. (Special to the “Herald.”) oLi.xtl£jiUiiUH.c-H, May 29. A reply to the opinion of Mr W. J. Poison, M.P., that a further 5 per cent, should be added to the totalisator tax. was made at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club by the chairman (Mr H. A. Knight). Mr Knight said that members would notice from the balance sheet that during the year the Club had paid in taxation £13,649. Thf» public had paid £21.600. and the owners £lBlO. He had noticed that Mr Poison was advocating a further 5 per cent, increase in totalisator tax, but that was simply killing the goose that laid the golden egg. There was always a limit bevond whicn they could not go. and that limit had already been reached, if not passed in. Referring to the proposal to enable money to be telegraphed to the totally ator, the chairman said that the Racing Conference had considered it inadvisable to place it before Parliament last year, but it was hoped that it would be given favourable consideration this year. It is fairly obvious that it would increase the revenue of all the clubs, and would give the Government more revenue. A great deal of the money which would be telegraphed to the totalisator now went to bookmakers.
