TEMUKA.

FOOTBALL TO-MORROW. The senior competition will take place at Victoria Park to-morrow, when Temuka and Waihi seniors try conclusions. Since last meeting, when Temuka won, both teams have shown considerable improvement, and as Waihi ran Old Boys to a close finish last Saturday, a very close game is expected to-morrow. Both teams have held well-attended practices during the week, and are stated to be in good form. A curtain raiser will be provided by Temuka and High School A fifths. THE SEXTON’S HOUSE. At the last meeting of the Temuka Borough Council, when cemetery business was being discussed, it was stated that the original portion of the Sexton’s house at the Cemetery was close on seventy years old, and that it was now in such a state of disrepair as to make it impossible to hang a door on the doorposts. The meeting discussed ways and means of raising funds to build a new house (to cost over £800), and finally decided to write to the Minister of Internal Affairs, asking if a loan could be raised, giving the house as security. Yesterday, an old resident of Temuka. in conversation with a “Herald" representative, cast doubts on the statement in regard to the age of the house. She said that she had now lived in Temuka for over 50 years, and that when she came to the town the sexton’s house was inside the cemetery gates, where the office now stands, and was occupied by Mr G. W. Edgeler. When Mr Edgeler retired, the house was taken over by the late Mr G. Phillips, who lived there for a number of years. It was during his term that the present house was built, about thirty-five years ago. The former house, she added, w*as sold for removal, and is now occupied in Birkett Street. COLD HALF-HOLIDAY. From early yesterday mo: Ing Temuka experienced bitterly cold weather, a fairly strong westerly wind, which later veered towards the south, blowing up King Street. The hills could be seen covered with a thick mantle of snow, and it was from this that the wind gathered the chill with which it was accompanied. “ FRIENDLY FRIDAYS.”

The card competition will be continued this evening, when Hibernians play Oddfellows and Druids play Citizens. The teams are as follows: — Hibernians—O. Connolly, J. Quinn, D. Fitzgerald, W. Tozer, J. Sullivan, J. Farrell, J. Spillane, D. Horgan, P. Burke, M. Healy, T. Brosnahan. M. Brosnahan, J. Brosnahan, T. Leonard. Oddfellows —R. Thomas, C. Norton, L. Hobbs, A. Young, J .Young, W. LIBRARY COMMITTEE. The committee of the Public Library were photographed in front of the library yesterday afternoon. Some of those present cast longing glances in the direction of the golf links. The majority were very cold (and little wonder), but all tried to look their best, even if they did realise that, for some, a spade would take the place of a golf club during the remainder of the afternoon. SPORTS IN DOMAIN. The Domain was the scene of football. basketball and hockey matches yesterday afternoon. At football, in the South Canterbury primary schools’ senior competition. Temuka defeated Marist by 24 points to nil. The home team showed all-round superiority. Temuka secured a victory also in a basketball match against Geraldine, winning by five goals to two. Miss Williamson and Mrs V. O’Connor were referees. In ladies' hockey. Geraldine and Temuka played a draw, each side scoring one goal. GENERAL NEWS. It was expected that Miss Aroha Clifford and a lady friend would fly to Temuka yesterday from Christchurch, and it is thought that their ! non-appearance could be attributed to the south-west wind that was blowing.
