SOUTH CANTERBURY JOCKEY

At a meeting of the Committee of the South Canterbury Jockey Club, there were present—Messrs H, Lowry (in the chair), H. Elworthy, A. S. Elworthy, D. Grant, C. H. Gresson, C. L. Orbell, T. R. Mackay and T. Seaton. The chairman made feeling reference to the great loss the sport had sustained by the death of Sir George Clifford, president of the Racing Confer-

ence. On Mr Lowry’s motion, it was decided that a letter of sympathy be forwarded to Lady Clifford.

The chairman mentioned also the loss sustained by the Oamaru district in the death of Mr O. R. Wise, and it was resolved that a letter of sympathy be sent to Mrs Wise and family.

The Gore Racing Club wrote asking the S.C.J.C. to come no nearer than a fortnight to the dates of the Gore meeting.—A letter had been sent advising that the request of the Gore Club would be kept in view. The Valuation Department advised that the valuation of the racecourse had been reduced from £8730 to £7500. A statement of receipts and expenditure in connection with the autumn race meeting was submitted and approved.

It was decided to ask the Railway Department to arrange a service for the winter meeting, and to recommend that the time of departure .of the special train for Christchurch be fixed as early as possible after the last race.

The caretaken reported on work carried out at the buildings and grounds since last meeting. One of the horses had died, and Mr T. Seaton had kindly loaned a horse in the meantime. It was decided that a set of new hurdles be procured, and that tne question of additional drains be left to the Ground Committee to attend to. It was agreed to write to trainers, asking them to refrain from bringing horses with colds to the course during training operations. Messrs W. Morrison and M. C. Harper were appointed extra stewards for the winter meeting. The Programme Committee submitted recommendations for the programme for the winter meeting, but left it to the Committee to decide whether a trotting event should be included.—After consideration, it was resolved that no trot could be included this year. The distance of the Smithfield Handicap was increased to one mile, and that of the Pareora Handicap to seven furlongs. The Doncaster Handicap and the Seadown Handicap were reduced to six furlongs, and with these alterations, last year’s programme was adhered to. There will be a hurdle race each day, two steeplechases on the first day, and one steeplechase on the second day.
