FATAL RIOTING IN INDIA.

Fierce Clashes With Police

VIOLENCE OF DISOBEDIENCE CAMPAIGN.

(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph- -Copyright.) (Received April 29, 6.55 p.m.) DELHI, April 29. Two were killed and many injured in rioting at Madras, when the police opened fire on a mob of over five thousand, who attacked them with stones, following a meeting in connection with the civil disobedience campaign. Scores of police officers and men were injured by stones, including the British Commissioner and DeputyAssistant Commissioner. The rioters also jeered and stoned Europeans in motor-cars. Mounted police drove the mob on the beach, where a fierce battle occurred in the darkness. Later the rioters returned to town, where there was more stoning of the police, who opened fire on four occasions, finally dispersing the crowd, aided by a detachment of the Middlesex Regiment. Gandhi’s Campaign. Gandhi, having failed in his campaign to break the salt laws, is now directing his attention toward pre- ! venting the sale of native liquor by a system of picketing by Congress vol--1 unteers. This new movement is expected to degenerate, as has the salt movement, into violence. The loss of revenue to the Government of India, if the drink traffic were abolished, would be nearly £14,000,000. Gandhi's efforts to secure the resignation of Government officials with the object of paralysing the administration have been almost a complete failure, except in the district of Gujerat.
