UNEMPLOYMENT,

RELIEF WORK WANTED AT DUNEDIN.

By Telegraph—Press Association. DUNEDIN. April 29.

A deputation of unemployed approached the Hon. W. B. Taverner, urging immediate work at 14/-, better working conditions on relief works, and Government canteens selling food at town prices. They urged the Minister to put on men at Hillside and the engine sheds to clean the engines, wash and repaint the rolling stock, and also the immediate application of the Department’s afforestation scheme and city relief works for men unable to go to the country. The Minister said the present Government had spent more on unemployment relief than any previous Governments, and would not let the unemployed down at the present juncture. He had the Government’s sanction for the acquisition of a large tract of land in Southland for afforestation, and was negotiating for more land near Dunedin, which would absorb many men for five months. He would communicate with the Minister of Public Works, and use his best endeavours in so far as the Prime Minister had made finance available. Inquiries would be instituted about the possibility of work cleaning engines and rolling stock. Concerning immediate relief, he saw no reason why the Charitable Aid Board should not deal with that efficiently.
