TEMUKA.

LOAN POLL CARRIED. The Temuka Borough Council held a poll of ratepayers yesterday for the purpose of obtaining permission to raise a loan of £IOOO to erect a new fire station, and procure equipment to replace that which was destroyed at the recent fire. It is also suggested that a motor vehicle should be procured for the conveyance of the firemen and the equipment. Not a great deal of interest was taken in the poll, and of the 761 persons eligible to vote, less than half exercised their franchise. There were two polling places, the Oddfellows’ Hall and the Borough Council Chambers. The returning officer, Miss Irene Meek, declared the result shortly after 7 o’clock, as follows: For. Ag’st. Inf’l. Oddfellows’ Hall .. 98 22 2 Borough Council .. 69 21 1 Totals 167 43 3 ■■ Majority for: 124. / The Mayor, addressing the electors S in front of the Council Chamber, ex- = pressed his pleasure at the result, and s said that it was an expression of con- =■ fidence in the Council. • = COURT CASES. Patrick and P. £ South. 5 > SCHOOL COMMITTEE. ' £ A meeting of the School Committee . z was held on Monday evening there be- £ ing present.—Messrs A. E. Smith £ (chairman), L. G. Scrimshaw, A. R. £ Beck, J. R. Longston, A. W. Buzan, M. S Swap, C. L. Fraser, J. Henry and E. B. : Cooper, jnr. (hon. secretary). : The Education Board intimated that : they had confirmed the appointment of £ Mr E. J. Hall as assistant master, and £ that he would probably take up duty z on May 26th. £ An account amounting to 4/2 was £ passed for payment. Mr C. L. Fraser withdrew his nomin- z ation for the committee on the grounds £ that several new candidates had been £ nominated, and as he had no children £ at the school it was unfair for him to z stand in the way of candidates who £ had. z The chairman said that he was sorry : !to lose the services of such a capable z treasurer and member. There was a ; possibility of getting as good a man, = but they could not get a better one. z Mr Scrimshaw appealed to Mr Fraser - to reconsider his decision, but he re- \ fused to do so, and the withdrawal was accepted with, regret. Householders’ Meeting - . Over 60 -householders attended the annual meeting. It is several years since such interest has been shown by the i householders, and the probable cause i was the action of the committee in discontinuing prize-giving last year. Mr A. E. Smith was voted to the chair. The annual report (as published on Monday), was read by the secretary (Mr E. SB. Cooper, jnr.), and the treasurer (Mr C. L. Fraser), read the balance sheet, which showed that the finances were in a healthy condition. >sln answer to Mr Z. Kay, the chairman explained that an item of £7/11/-, was incidental expenses. -The chairman moved the adoption of the report and balance sheet, this being seconded by Mr A. W. Buzan and carried, without discussion. Whilst the votes in connection with the election of the new committee were being counted. Mr Z. Kay moved that it be a recommendation to the new committee that the system of prize-giving be reinstated this year. Mr Burtenshaw seconded the motion. Mr W. Berry moved as an amendment that certificates only be awarded, the same as last year, this being seconded by Mr J. Davis. The chairman, in explaining why the system of giving prizes had been dis ■ continued, said that usually the prizes reached the hands of the fortunate few I who went successfully from standard to standard. Under the other system of spending the money in suitable booses for each standard, every chilu in his or her standard had equal access to these books whenever they liked. En; i year the committee had expended from £25 to £3O in books for prizes for which no subsidy was received. If the committee | spend £3O in library books, the Depart--1 ment subsidised it by a similar amount. I He had made enquiries that day regarding the demand for books in each I class, and it was surprising the number of books that had been in circulation since the beginning of the term. The Temuka School was not alone so far as substituting certificates for prizes was concerned. Mr Kingston said that it must not be overlooked that many objected to the committee making their decision so late in the year as September. Mr Lloyd enquired if it was a fact that two of the committee were absent when the matter was discussed. The chairman answered in the affirmative, and said that all the members had notice of the meeting. The headmaster said that although there were 300 volumes in the library, many of the books were old, and he

could easily spend a lot more money than he was likely to get in building up a stock. A library which contained the proper sort of books in each class was of great benefit to the weaker sections of each standard. It also trained the pupils to refer to bpoks and this < made them self-reliant and confident. ■ I To give prizes was a luxury, wfyich the L school could not afford. ( I On being put to the meeting the 1 amendment in favour, dispensing with 1 the prize-giving, was carried by an L i overwhelming majority, only four vot- . ' ing against it. | Hearty votes of thanks were passed . jto the headmaster and staff, to the j janitor (Mr J. Denison), to the chair- . i man and members of the committee, 1 and to the Press. A meeting of the new committee was , • then held, when Mr A. E. Smith w-3* 1 re-elected chairman for the fifth consecutive term. Mr F. G. Franklin was appointed treasurer, and Mr E. B. f Cooper, junr., secretary. - It was agreed to meet on the second Tuesday of each month. Mr C. L. e Fraser donated a gold medal as a dux " prize for this year. A hearty vote of 1 thanks- was passed to Mr Fraser. It was agreed to close the school on May 9th for term holidays, and to re- _ | open on May 26th. i Messrs Smith and Swap were apJ pointed visitors for the month.
