FAIRLIE

ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. A man of middle-age, a native of Australia, who has been working in the Fairlie district for a short time, was admitted to the Fairlie hospital about mid-day on Tuesday suffering from injuries apparently self-inflicted. It is understood that he cut his throat with a razor in a woolshed owned by Mr B. Smith at Kimbell. He was found by Mr Smith, who reported the matter to the doctor and police, who attended and admitted the man to hospital. His condition is fairly serious. ANZAC DAY. The service which was held at Fairlie on Anzac Day was well attended, a good many only having standing room. In the absence of Mr C. J. Talbot, chairman of the County Council, Mr A. F. Campbell occupied the chair. On the platform with him were the Revs. McWilliam and Marton. The usual hymns were sung and following a prayer by the Rev. Mr Marton, the Rev. T. J. McWilliam delivered an inspiring address. After the service a number of wreaths were laid on the Memorial, one being from the Returned Soldiers of the Mackenzie County in honour of their fallen comrades, and one from the Mackenzie County Council.

OBSTETRICAL SOCIETY. The following subscriptions were received at the County Council office:—

FOOTBALL. The Mackenzie,Sub-Union’s competitions opened in dull, but fine weather. This year there are only three teams in the competition. On Saturday Fairlie defeated Aorangi in both senior and junior games, Albury having a bye. The attendance was only fair. In the junior game, Fairlie v. Aorangi, the former won by 27 to 5. For the winners Creighton (2), E. Doyle, Loughnan, and F. Pickering, scored tries. Crampton converted 3, and also kicked two penalties. For Aorangi, M. Sims scored, and converted his own try. Mr Ken Barr was referee.

In the senior game, Fairlie defeated Aorangi by 22 points to 3, but it was only in the latter part of the second spell that the Fairlie forwards took charge and gave their backs several good openings. The Aorangi forwards were too light for the Reds, but their back division was a good one. Fairlie 22, Aorangi 3. Fairlie won the toss and defended the western goal. McNeill returned the kick off past halfway. From the lineout Pickering sent Keenan away. McNeill accepted his pass, but was well tackled by Dale, and Loomes returned to neutral ground. Williams and O’Reilly led the Red forwards into Aorangi’s territory, but a long kick by Buckley drove them back to the Red 2a. Aorangi attacked strongly, Robertson being responsible for a good bieak through a force resulting. From the drop out O’Reilly and Black took play to midfield. From a line-out Kerr and McNarry got away, but were checked by McNeill marking, and the latter with a strong kick put Fairlie in a good position. Pickering sent Keenan away from the line, Dale savihg. Aorangi were penalised near the 25 and Forrester kicked a good goal. Fairlie 3, Aorangi 0. McNeill fielded the kick-off, and with a kick gained 30 yards. Giddings and O’Reilly broke away., Robertson saving, and a free to Aorangi brought further relief. Keenan picked up smartly and made a good opening, but held on too long. Pickering sent the Fairlie backs away Keenan Brothers and Forrester being prominent. Forrester cross-kicked and Benson secured and lined well upfield. McNarry secured in a line out and gave to Robertson, who gained considerable ground before being brought down by Giddings. Bracken gained further ground, but a forward pass spoilt a good opening. Keenan brothers. Forrester and McNeill next figured in a good passing movement, but McNeill was penalised and Dale cleared. The Fairlie forwards attacked, and from a scrum ten yards out, keenan sent his backs away. McNeill scoring a try in the corner Giddings failed with the kick. Fairlie 6, Aorangi 0. Fairlie returned to the 25, where Forrester narrowly missed with a pot. The blue forwards, headed by Cameron, took play past halfway a kick by Loomes gave the Aorangi a chance, Pickering saving for Fairlie. A smart piece of play by Bracken and Fairlie in difficulties, T. Pickering effecting a good save. Talbot got away from a line-out, going to half-way before being checked by Dale. Loomes took play to Fairlie territory, where Aorangi were awarded a free, and Cameron kicked a goal from 30 yards out. Fairlie 6. Aorangi 3. Fairlie were again. penalised, but Dale failed to find touch and F. Black sent the Red forwards away, a force resulting. Sinclair was responsible for a good solo effort but he had no support. Good passing by Black and McNeill saw Fairlie again on attack, Buckley saving as half-time was called. Fairlie 6, Aorangi 3. On resuming, Fairlie were penalised for off-side and Cameron narrowly missed with a good kick. Hannifin fielded a high kick by Loomes and gained ground with a tricky run. Forrester, after beating two men, sent McNeill away, the latter scoring after a good run down the touch line. Giddings kick went wide. Fairlie 9.Aorangi 3. Talbot, Black and Williams combined in a loose rush to the Blue line, but were pulled up for a knock-on, and Dale saved from the scrum. Robertson and Sinclair gained further ground, Hannifin effecting a smart save. Loomes broke through but Hannifin again saved. McNeill gathered in cmartly, and after beating three men scored his third try. Forrester was successful with the kick. Fairlie 14. Aorangi 3. Aorangi attacked, and Hannifin picked up and after beating- several opponents raced for the line and short punted. Pickering gathered in well and sent out to Hannifin, the full-back finishing off a good movement by scoring behind the posts. Pickering made no mistake with the kick. Fairlie 19, Aorangi 3. The Fairlie forwards now had charge and from a combined rush Williams scored. Pickering’s kick failed and time was called with the score, Fairlie 22, Aorangi 3. Mr G. Manchester controlled the game.
