MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

MONDAY, APRIL 28, 1930. (Before Mr C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M.) Alleged Assault. Keith Frank Turner appeared on remand charged with assaulting Leona’d Horace McDuff at Washdyke on April 19, so as to cause grevious bodily harm. Senior-Sergeanut I. H. Mathieson said that he had communicated with the hospital, and had been advised that McDuff was progressing favourably, but was not yet out of danger. The police would leave the matter open so far as bail was concerned. Mr J. Emslie, who appeared for the accused, renewed his application for j bail. He said that the accused had been in prison over a week now. He was a married man with four children and was not likely to attempt to leave the town. Two substantial bondsmen had been secured, and if bail was allowed, a condition could be made that accused report to the police daily. The Magistrate: “I understand the man is not yet out of danger.” Senior-Sergeant Mathieson: “That is so.” The Magistrate skid that it was not I customary to grant bail in a case where a man’s life was in danger. He intended to remand accused in custody j till to-morrow, when a further report i regarding the injured man’s condition would be obtained. Alleged Sheep Stealing. Henry Lawson Brown was charged that on or about March 20, at Pleasant Point, he did steal two sheep val- j ued at £3/10/-, the property of George j Blakemore. Accused was represented by Mr L. M. Inglis. Inspector A. S. Bird said that the j accused had only been arrested that j morning, and he would ask for a re- J mand until May 8. If bail was grant- 1 ed. he would ask that it be substantial, as another charge was pending. The Magistrate: “Are there a large number of sheep involved?” Inspector Bird: “Not a great number.” A remand, as asked for, was granted, bail being allowed in self £2OO, and two sureties of £IOO.
