TWO EMPIRES
Rome rose and ruled by force and savage pride, Which blindly seek their own, not others’ good, Rome fell by pride betrayed, by vice subdued, That enervates the heart where faith has died. Now fronts the world an Empire still more wide, Born of the virile Anglo-Saxon brood, With purer faith inspired and wiser mood, And deeper sympathies to be her guide. Our task remains into one chain to weld The Empire’s scattered links and so increase Her might for good, and still by steadfast faith, Wise hope and courage undismayed upheld, To work as brothers to the verge of death, For love’s high vision of a world at peace. —T. A. Lehfeldt.
